Hanging metal shelving with wooden shelves in the garage will make use of the space for storing the necessary things and tools. You can do it yourself using several boards and shaped pipes, and if you do not know how to cook metal yet, then it’s time to learn this..
To make a rack, we need materials:
- Profile pipe 25×25 mm – 3 pcs. by 2 m.
- Steel strip 25×4 mm – 1.1 m.
- Wooden board 25×200 mm – 2 pcs. by 4 m.
- Paint or varnish for wood.
- Metal paint.
Instruments:
- Miter saw or jigsaw.
- Welding machine and electrodes.
- Cordbrush or wire drill attachment.
- Safety glasses, gloves.
- Hacksaw for metal.
- Angle grinder (grinder) with discs for cutting metal and stripping.
- Rotary hammer or drill.
- Drills for wood and metal.
- Kern.
- Wall anchors, depending on wall material.
- Self-tapping screws for metal.
- Gon.
Step 1. Create a drawing
First, let’s create a drawing, for clarity it can be applied to the wall.
The height of the vertical racks of the rack is 120 cm, the width of the shelves is 20 cm, the length of the shelves is 200 cm.The distance between the vertical racks is 75 cm, and the shelves protrude beyond the outer brackets by 21 cm.
There are 4 shelves in total in the rack, which can be placed at a distance depending on the items that will be stored on it.
Step 2. Cut the metal
With a cut-off saw, a hacksaw for metal or a grinder with a cut-off disk, we cut the blanks:
- Profile pipe – 3 sections of 120 cm and 12 sections of 20 cm.
- Steel strip – 15 pieces of 7.5 cm.
We clean the cuts from burrs, cuts and excess metal.
Step 3. Weld brackets, drill holes in wall mounts
We weld the brackets to the wall mounts using a magnetic angle to form a right angle between the parts to be welded, if it is absent, use the clamps, and then to the vertical racks of the rack.
We remove the scale with a cord brush, and the irregularities of the welded seam using a grinding machine.
We weld all the joints, then mark the holes in the wall mounts in the center at a distance of 2.5 cm from the top edge.
Using a core and a hammer, we make marks for drilling, then we drill holes and countersink them.
The hole diameter depends on the size of the anchors.
Step 4. Preparing the shelves
We cut the boards of the required length, in our case – 200 cm each.
We process the boards with sandpaper or a sander. We paint the surfaces or open them with varnish. We painted the shelves in shabby chic style.
Step 5. Paint the metal structure
First, we will process the entire metal structure with a grinder and a cord brush to obtain a clean surface.
Then we prime and paint on metal in two layers. For ease of painting, the brackets can be temporarily fixed to a piece of plywood or an unnecessary board.
Step 6. We fix the structure to the wall, install the shelves
We attach each of the vertical racks of the rack to the wall and ceiling, outline the places of fasteners. We use a level to make sure the position of each of the racks is correct. Then we attach the racks to the walls and ceiling using anchors.
We put the shelves on the brackets, drill holes in the shelves and brackets for future fixing. We countersink the holes to sink the screws. We attach all the shelves to the brackets. Shelving is ready.
Enjoy!
