How to set up a home office

We are used to resting at home and working in the office. But life often shifts accents, and our home becomes our workplace. It’s good if there is a separate office for it – an autonomous space, where you can not only create the most comfortable working conditions for yourself, but also not think about how harmoniously the work furniture fits into it.

As for a more typical situation, when a part of the living space, for example, a living room, is allocated for an office, there are two options for solving the problem: disguise the workplace or, conversely, put it on public display, making the main decoration of the room. Which option should you choose? It all depends on the attitude to work. If you don’t want to constantly contemplate your workplace, then hide it away, as they say, “out of sight – out of mind”.

We bring to your attention several interesting options for placing a workplace. Take a closer look at them, perhaps one of them will be a useful and effective solution in relation to the space of your home. A work area that takes up part of a bedroom can be cleverly placed in a closet. This is a radical solution: tired of working – just close the sliding door. In this case, we are talking about the door of the wardrobe.

You can use a transforming and mobile cabinet. It opens like a folder, in its central section, in addition to a computer, a printer and business folders are located, and in the side rotary sections there is also a small library.

It can consist of a cantilever structure (one open shelf and two closed ones with hinged doors, as well as a table, the legs of which are equipped with wheels). If you put the desk with its end to the console, it turns into a dining table. After a meal, folding chairs are removed into a special niche, the table rotates – and a full-fledged workplace is ready. Or another combination on wheels: chair, table and three-tiered shelving unit. This is a very interesting shelf unit. When the table is brought up to it, then it is a rack. And if, for example, the table was needed for lunch and rolled back, the rack turns into an independent desktop: a computer is placed on it, all that remains is to pull out the panel for the keyboard, and please – you can work.

A completely unusual option is a table with a glass top. The monitor is located not on the table, but under it, which significantly saves space. You look down at the monitor through the glass of the table top. The space on the table remains free, after finishing work you just need to slide the keyboard and go about your household chores. In this case, the table must be placed so that the glare from the glass tabletop is minimally reflected on the monitor screen and does not strain your eyes.

As a rule, when buying furniture for a home office, we make several common mistakes. First, we think about how the new furniture will fit into the existing interior of the house, how its style, dimensions and color will affect the overall “scenario” of the space. We calculate how much the purchase will be burdensome for the family budget, and how you can save money here. The issues of convenience and comfort, as a rule, fade into the background – and completely in vain, because both labor productivity and the pace of work depend on the right decision. As for the computer, the basic rule here is that the monitor should be at the same level with the eyes so that you do not have to raise or lower your head all the time. The distance between the eyes and the screen should be 45-60 cm, depending on the screen size. The keyboard should be positioned so that your palms can be placed on the table. This will give your hands extra support and not get tired..

Now about the furniture. Distinctive features of furniture for small offices are lightness and mobility. When you need to move it from one room to another or from one area to another, a number of difficulties arise. Therefore, it is good if, in addition to the elegant appearance, the furniture, the computer table will also have roller supports. This mobility will allow the office to be deployed anywhere, as long as there is an electrical outlet nearby. The table should have a wide top. This is not only a matter of convenience, but also of health. If you move the monitor and keyboard relative to each other on a narrow table, your spine will automatically “move”, which will create its deformation. An important element of the workplace is a chair. Experts advise to forget about the usual chair once and for all and buy a real work chair with adjustable backrest, seat and armrests.

Sit tightly on it, feet should touch the floor completely, legs bent at the knees should form a right angle. Do not work in poor light, it is very harmful to the eyes. It is better to purchase a special adjustable “computer” lamp. The light falls from the left and does not enter the eyes, only the workplace. It is advised to avoid bright walls in the work area because harsh contrasts can tire the eyes. But funny pencil holders, diaries, holders for papers and documents can become those bright spots and details that lift your spirits and make your workplace more attractive. Indoor plants, especially dracaena, ivy, cactus, date palm, create the right microclimate in the home office and weaken the harmful effects of radiation from monitors.
