Mineral wool is actively used in systems of hinged ventilated facades, a special case of which is siding of a house. Unfortunately, sometimes even the regulations of the manufacturers of such systems do not clarify the installation procedure, but in our instructions we will highlight the main points.

Typical insulation systems

In the technical albums of mineral wool manufacturers, you can find four types of facade insulation systems, suitable for subsequent siding. Two of them involve the use of lumber for the device of the supporting subsystem, the other two use a metal profile.

Timber framed systems are most preferred for timber houses and frame type buildings. Also, wooden posts can be used on stone foundations if there is no need to level them. A significant plus of a wooden frame is the low cost and availability of lumber even in remote regions and a simple construction process without special technological requirements. There are also disadvantages: limited service life, high thermal conductivity, significant weight of the supporting system.

In metal frames, both a standard galvanized profile for gypsum boards and a specialized set of products for IAF systems can be used, including all the necessary elements for attaching the racks to the wall, aligning and strengthening them. Profiles for gypsum boards, as a rule, are used with an insulation thickness of up to 80 mm, special systems – with a thermal protection thickness of over 150 mm. The main advantages of using a metal subsystem are the possibility of technological and accurate alignment, as well as a higher final energy efficiency of such insulation. Despite the fact that the thermal conductivity of metal is higher than that of wood, the total proportion of cantilever mountings is significantly less than in the case of wooden struts, which are straight and pronounced temperature bridges..

Frame installation

In the case of thermal insulation of frame buildings, the wall posts serve as the main bearing element for the heat protection belt and decoration. If it is necessary to increase the thickness of the insulation, horizontal sheathing beams are packed from the outside, between which additional mineral wool slabs are laid. After that, a protective shell is arranged, vertical slats are stuffed for attaching the siding, due to the thickness of which a ventilated gap is formed – at least 30 mm.

A wooden support system on stone foundations is arranged in a similar way. Boards with a thickness of 50 mm and a width equal to the required thickness of the insulation belt are attached to the base of the wall. In the boards, countersunk holes must be counterbored to half the depth, then fastened with anchor bolts. For preliminary alignment of the subsystem plane between the wall and the boards, lining made of mounting wedges or sets of wooden slats of various thicknesses are installed. After laying the insulation, a protective shell is arranged, a counter-rail is stuffed on top of the racks, which acts as a distance bar to form a ventilation gap. It is also possible to arrange a cross system, in which, due to the displacement of the distance lathing relative to the main struts, the main cold bridges are eliminated.

Fastening of a standard galvanized profile for gypsum board is carried out using direct hangers, the CD-60 profile is usually used as racks. A profile of standard size WD-50 can also be used, it is usually used with an insulation thickness of more than 100 mm and L-shaped console mountings are made from it. The connection of the parts of the supporting system is performed with self-tapping screws LM-11, which in common people are called “bugs”.

Specialized systems use a set of adjustable console mountings. The connection of the racks to the consoles is carried out on bolts, which ensures high positioning accuracy. Fastening of the counter-lattice and reinforcing struts is usually performed with self-tapping screws with a press washer, and if it is necessary to preserve the face plane – with blind rivets..

The installation of any type of support system should be carried out only after careful calculation of the position of the posts or spacers to which the siding panels and end elements will be attached. So, in the places where the vertical joining profiles are installed, two vertical posts should be located, each 200 mm from the joint. Between them, with a step of 40 cm, horizontal crossbars are installed, to which the H-shaped docking profile will be attached. At the corners, the supporting elements are placed in a similar way, but instead of straight crossbeams, the extreme posts are connected by L-shaped inserts. Particular attention must be paid to the framing of the openings: it is performed with rectangular frames, the width and height of which are determined in accordance with the required dawn of the slopes.

The main difficulty when insulating with mineral wool for siding is to correctly combine the size of the insulation plates and the step of the frame racks. In RAF systems, hydrophobized slabs with a density of 35-50 kg / m are mainly used3, and with two-layer insulation – 70-80 kg / m3 for the inner layer. These materials have a standard width of 60 cm, which causes certain difficulties..

For wooden frames without an offset counter-lattice and metal IAF systems, such a step of the frame racks is suitable for cladding with vinyl and metal siding. For galvanized gypsum plasterboard profiles and wooden frames for wooden siding, the spacing of the posts should be reduced to 40 cm or less. To adjust the width of the insulation, there are two options: use slabs whose length is a multiple of 40 cm and cut them across, thereby irrationally increasing the number of joints, or reduce the spacing of the racks to 30 cm and cut standard slabs along.

The density of the slabs allows them to be inserted, however, due to the considerable height of the heat protection belt, additional fastening is required to prevent the insulation from shrinking under its own weight. For insulation of stone walls, for this purpose, disc dowels are used, which are placed with a density of 5-6 pcs / m2. In frame walls, the insulation is supported by thin (15–20 mm) spacer strips, which are fixed between the posts as the insulation is laid at horizontal joints..

Mineral wool protection

Despite the fact that significant air currents do not act in the ventilated space under the siding, the mineral wool must be protected from the outdoor environment. For this purpose, roll materials are used, called superdiffusion membranes. They do not allow a draft to penetrate into the area where the insulation is placed, while letting in water vapor and performing the role of waterproofing, protecting mineral wool from condensed moisture and water fog. Membranes should be laid with a certain side to the insulation, their installation is carried out in a horizontal direction, starting from the bottom, while at the joints, the upper sheets should overlap the lower ones by 10 cm, for which there is a corresponding marking on the edges of the material. The membrane is preliminarily attached to the racks of the frame system with a stapler, then pressed with a counter lattice. The overlap lines must be glued with special adhesive tape..

The insulation from the inside is protected by steam-limiting films, the throughput of which is determined by the calculation of the moisture accumulation of the wall cake. The vapor barrier is located under the interior trim and must be tucked into the ceiling, forming a single sealed circuit. Because of this, in buildings insulated with mineral wool, the organization of supply and exhaust ventilation is required to maintain the concentration of carbon dioxide at a safe level.
