Terrazzo technology means the creation of mosaic surfaces, both with and without seams, using a base in the form of cement, concrete, with the addition of stones, including marble, glass, and other materials of various fractions.
From Ancient Greece, terrazzo, while exclusively as a floor covering, came to Ancient Rome, where it also took root. The technology gained particular popularity in Venice, where the terrazziero profession appeared. In our country, terrazzo is also by no means a novelty. Remember the colorful mosaic floors in many Soviet establishments! And the most famous example of the use of terrazzo can confidently be called the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Initially, the terrazzo technique was used exclusively as an arrangement of floor coverings, and without seams, by pouring on a screed. However, with the development of technology, concrete-based mosaics began to be used to create tiles, stair treads, countertops, shower trays, wall cladding inside and outside the house with mosaic panels. Bathtubs and sinks are poured from mosaic concrete today; this is an excellent option for a warm floor. In general, this is an artificial stone, but made exclusively from natural materials..
What is the main charm of terrazzo – the widest scope for experiments with materials, textures and colors. Stone chips or glass shards can be of very different shapes and sizes, differ in color. As a result, tiles or floors are exclusive and unique. Although now on an industrial scale, of course, they make whole series of terrazzo tiles.
The second significant plus of floor coverings and other products using terrazzo technology is durability. They serve 50-100 years, if the technique was followed and quality materials were used.
Important! Terrazzo seamless self-leveling floors are at greater risk of cracking than tiles. However, cracks can be removed, specialists successfully restore surfaces.
Terrazzo is easy to care for. Rags, a sponge – everything you need to dust off and wash away stains. True, it is better to wipe off stains from juice, wine or coffee immediately so that they do not soak into the mosaic concrete. The glossy surface should be wiped with a semi-dry cloth so as not to leave streaks.
Today, various plasticizers and modifiers are added to terrazzo mosaic concrete, which increase its resistance, including to temperature extremes. Therefore, the composition of the terrazzo may differ slightly from the traditional one, you should inquire about such moments from the manufacturer.
As you can see, the scope of application of terrazzo is unusually large. Despite the solid “experience”, this technology remains modern and is actively used by designers today.
