What is a deadbolt? What is a Doviator? What is called a crab?
Rigel – it is a locking device in the form of a metal rod, which is pulled out of the lock (latch, doviator) and is included in the door frame (frame). Usually in one lock from 3 to 5 crossbars. And there is also a language – this is the same as a crossbar, but rectangular in shape, and there is only one language.
Doviator (deviator, reducer, distributor) is an additional locking device with one or more bolts. The doviator is driven from the lock through rods (metal strips or tubes). Doviator is needed for greater protection of the door from force opening. Allows you to additionally fix the locking side of the door in the lower or upper parts (or both at once).
Crab (crab system, crab lock, crab pulls) is a conventional name for a locking system with crossbars extending into the upper and lower parts of the door leaf. The name was acquired, apparently, by association with a crab with “legs sticking out in all directions.” Previously, such systems were made handicraft, now most manufacturers produce locks with the ability to attach rods for “crab”. The same traction drives the doviator..
What is the difference between locks? There are so many different types of them … leveled, cylinder … Some kind of larvae … Which is better?
According to the principle of the secret mechanism, the locks are divided into two groups:
Lever locks often, unknowingly, they are called safe locks, since earlier locks of this particular group were almost always used in safes (if you do not take into account rotary coding locks, which are not used in doors and will not be considered). Often, a safe lock is called a lock with round locking elements (crossbars), which is a mistake. The leveler system of the castle is the most ancient and was used in a simplified form in the first castles invented by man. The basis of its action is a set of plates (levers) which, lining up under the action of the teeth (beard) of the key in strictly defined positions, allow turning the lock mechanism. The mismatch of at least one levers with the “correct” position makes it impossible to open the lock. The larger the levers, the more difficult it is to pick the lock. With sufficient protection of the mechanism from drilling, with high-precision manufacturing of levers, with a large number of them and if there are special teeth on them (making it difficult to work with a master key), opening a lock of this type is very, very difficult even for a professional bugbear (a specialist in opening locks). The disadvantage of this system is the relatively large key and the inconvenience of replacing the mechanism (for example, in the event of a key loss). The entire lock has to be changed, since the levers and the drive of the locking elements are interconnected. This problem was solved by the Italians, who produced several types of locks with a replaceable set of levers..
Cylinder lock system – a product of modern technologies and appeared in the 20th century. Locks of this type are more common these days due to their ease of use and replacement. In fact, if necessary, it is not the lock mechanism that changes, but only its secret part – the cylinder, known to most as a larva. This element of the lock, transmitting the turn of the key to the mechanism, is a secret (encryption) device that works with only one specific key combination. The action of the mask is based on the principle of building a combination of heights of small cylindrical elements (hence the name). As in the lever lock, the mismatch of at least one element makes it impossible to open. The degree of secrecy is determined by the number of cylindrical elements, the accuracy of their manufacture, possible positions in height, the location inside the mask and the ability to access the master key. There are larvae that use plates rather than cylinders. Such masks are more often used in cars (door, trunk, ignition), since they are less sensitive to dirt and water, but at the same time are considered less reliable..
It is impossible to say unequivocally which of the systems is better. Each has its own pros and cons. It seems to us that the best (but not always the cheapest) option is to install two locks of different systems, or one two-system one. In the case of a single lock, it is necessary to install additional protection systems – protective linings and protectors.
Why do some doors have steel sheets both on the outside and on the inside of the door (for example, “Guardian”), and on other doors (“Steel”) only on the outside, and on the inside it is optional. What basically gives the inner sheet?
As for domestic steel doors, which are mostly produced on an individual order, the number and thickness of sheets is a matter of the customer’s desire. But at the same time, it seems to us, it should be borne in mind that the door, after all, is intended to protect against external influences. That is why we usually put one, but thicker sheet on the outside.
It should be noted that when using two sheets of metal, it is difficult to access the inside of the door, for example, to repair or replace locks with a locking system in different directions. As a rule, manufacturers of such doors leave a technological hatch from the inside, through which manipulations with the lock are performed. It follows from this that the second (inner) sheet either protects the locks from the inside, but makes it impossible to access them, or has hatches, and does not protect the locks. Therefore, the meaning of the second sheet as protection is minimal..
Now we should consider the second sheet as a means of increasing the rigidity of the structure. Of course, when using a sheet on both sides of the door leaf, the rigidity of the structure increases, but only if other elements defining the rigidity (ribs and frame) are not reliable enough, for example, they are made from a corner of 32 or less.
It should also be noted that a door with two sheets of metal is heavier than a similar one with one, even thicker, sheet. For example, an ordinary double-leaf door 2mm + 2mm or 2.5mm + 1.5mm, that is, the total sheet thickness is 4 mm. And a single-leaf door – 3 mm. A heavier door increases the load on the hinges and is more difficult to open and close.
From the above, we can conclude: When using sufficiently reliable and rigid materials for the manufacture of the frame of the canvas, the second sheet is not needed.
There are also imported doors, consisting of two sheets of metal with a large number of stiffeners. These doors have one important advantage – they can be installed with both external and internal opening. And the small (compared to domestic) thickness of the metal is compensated by the protective fittings on the lock. In this case, the use of two sheets is quite acceptable and justified..
Besides keys, a card was attached to the MUL-T-LOCK lock (cylinder). What is it for? If you need to order a key – can this be done without a card? Where are the keys made?
We have several models of MUL-T-LOCK cylinders, and not all of them come with cards. The fact is that the card allows you to make a new key using the code written on it, without presenting the key. Moreover, in “developed capitalist countries” the key can be duplicated only by a card, when checking the owner’s signature. In Russia, this system does not work, and a copy of the key can be made without a card, according to the original key. Moreover, in most workshops, they cannot do it just by the card, since this requires special equipment.
Due to the fact that in Russia there is such a situation with duplication, we buy some of the cylinders without cards, which are cheaper for both our company and the consumer, for example, the MUL-T-LOCK cylinder model “MAGEN”.
For inexpensive cylinders of the 7×7 model, a card is given, but does not have a key code.
If you need copies of the keys, you can contact us and we will make you the required number of copies, both with a card and without it. It should be noted that, unfortunately, at the moment we do not duplicate the keys of the “7×7” model, but we can tell the workshop where they will help you.
Where should the entrance metal door open, outward or inward?
When using doors from good manufacturers, there is no fundamental difference. This applies to both imported and domestic doors..
It should be noted, however, that global standards provide for internal opening. But foreign manufacturers produce doors that are equally suitable for both internal and external opening. This is achieved due to the double sealing circuit on the leaf and the use of locks with locking in several directions..
The choice is yours. See how it is more convenient for you. Opening outward (typical for Russia) saves space in the apartment. For many, this is the main argument. Opening inwards will not disturb your neighbors and is therefore recommended by the fire brigade.
Outcome: there is no difference in reliability. Both are good.
Do you have remote locks? How do they work?
Their principle of operation is as follows: There is a “lock body” – that is, a device that locks / unlocks the door and a “control unit” that recognizes the “key” and sends a signal to the lock to open. In this case, a smart card, a key fob like a car alarm, and a toch-memory device, and entering a code from the keyboard, and even a simple button pressed by a security guard can serve as a “key”.
Accordingly, the only question is which device suits you best..
How reliable are your locks? They surely won’t be opened? Is MUL-T-LOCK a guarantee of security? I heard that locks are opened with plasticine and chewing gum…
It is unrealistic to find a mechanical locking system used in everyday life and costing “reasonable” money, which could not be opened even theoretically. A matter of time, experience, tool and talent.
As for specific locks, I can also say the following:
I admit the possibility of opening the MUL-T-LOCK with master keys. I know a man who opens Mottura Castle in 10-15 minutes. I admit the existence of specialists capable of opening MTL with master keys – in Moscow. Personally not familiar, and only heard of those. In any case, all people of similar qualifications work (worked) for state organizations of a special profile (the former KGB) and, accordingly, cannot have a relationship with criminals.
In my opinion, it is impossible to open MTL without mechanical damage (that is, with master keys) in a period of time less than 1.5 – 2 hours of painstaking work. Work not squatting in the entrance, but in a calm and quiet environment, with the appropriate tool.
It is absolutely certain that it is impossible to open even the weaker KALE cylinder of the English type with plasticine or chewing gum. Chewing gum can open the so-called “cross-cylinders” and, I suppose, cheap English-type cylinders with an extremely high degree of wear (several years of intensive use).
It is absolutely unrealistic to open MTL, Mottura, Cisa by selecting a key.
All cases of criminal opening (without damage) of high-security locks known to me are the result of keys falling into the wrong hands. I note that for example for me, a person who thoroughly knows the structure of the MTL cylinder, 30 seconds of examining the key is enough to memorize its code and make a copy of it. True, a copy can be made only on the “native” MTL machine, of which there are hardly more than a dozen in Moscow. To take an impression from the key, 2-3 seconds are supposedly enough. And this (cast or code extraction) applies not only to MTL keys, but also to any other manufacturer of mechanical locks. I specialize in MTL, and let’s say, the MOTTURA key won’t tell me much, but you can master it too.
Output – it is impossible to defend against a person. Any lock can be broken.
And what to do to sleep well?
Answer: in my opinion, it is necessary to compare the value of property and the likelihood of theft with the reliability of locks and doors. That is, if you have $ 100,000 worth of property in your house, then the protection should be appropriate. And if there is nothing to take besides the old video recorder, then you shouldn’t go broke on super castles. Most thefts happen on a tip, and a high-quality bugbear will not open a random door. One of my colleagues quoted a figure that it is necessary to spend about 4% of the value of the protected property on security. In general, I agree with him. And I will separately note that the locks considered above were mechanical. The complex “lock + alarm” or “lock + electronic blocker” – increase the reliability of the protection system at times, or even an order of magnitude.
At the same time, one cannot save much on locks. Having saved on the lock today, you will pay twice tomorrow for its repair, or the lock will fail at the most inopportune time. The second moment – the castle must be balanced. Let me explain – if you put a highly secret larva in a weak lock, you get a hybrid like an “oki” with a “kenguryatnik” – it looks good – but there is no real protection. Undoubtedly, in the same way, that locks must be durable and reliable.
And of course, you cannot leave your keys unattended. If you are not sure that the keys were only in your hands – change the lock! Even for your own peace of mind. The “lost” key can “return” in a year.
What is MDF?
(MDF, HDF – German, MDF – Medium Density Fibreboard – eng. WOOD-FIBER PLATE OF MEDIUM DENSITY) Do not confuse with fiberboard. Environmentally friendly material, as no additional synthetic binders are used. The binder is lignin, which is part of the wood. It is made by dry pressing of finely dispersed wood chips at high temperature and pressure. Handles well. In terms of moisture resistance and mechanical characteristics, it surpasses natural wood. MDF is slow-burning, bio-resistant, weather-resistant and cheaper than wood. It is used mainly for facade elements, less often for furniture cases.
