How to choose interior doors

Choosing interior doors for your home can be a daunting task! This guide will provide the information you need to make the right choice. For starters, you should consider the size, material, design, fire safety rating, and cost of the door. Pre-hung and slab doors are the two main types of interior doors; Pre-hung doors come with the door frame already assembled, while slab doors are just a flat door without the frame. Additionally, hollow core and solid core are the two main materials available. Hollow core doors are generally cheaper and lighter, whereas solid core doors are more soundproof and durable. Lastly, there are many different designs of interior doors to choose from, and they range from contemporary to classic. So, with proper research and knowledge, you can select the door that best fits your home's interior while being mindful of your budget.

First of all, you need to formulate your requirements for interior doors and determine:

  • a price range that is acceptable to you;
  • required door opening options;
  • door design requirements;
  • required dimensions;
  • the need for additional doors (mezzanines, cabinets), similar in design to the doors.

Then, it is advisable to decide on the design of the doors, taking into account the circumstances outlined below. Solid wood doors are the most expensive, but at the same time they can become a true decoration of the interior and bring the energy of natural wood into the house; elegance of detail processing, variety of forms of massive doors amaze the imagination. These doors will serve for many years, they are maintainable. But the durability and flawless operation of solid wood doors depends on the manufacturers’ compliance with all technological process cycles in their manufacture, as well as on the quality of the adhesives and varnishes they use. Some manufacturers even put their logo on the door rebate as a kind of quality mark, for example Garofoli (Italy).

Many models of modern doors made of combined materials, using wood-like materials (especially MDF), are practically not inferior in beauty, durability and performance to solid wood doors. But they are cheaper and less prone to reacting to changes in indoor humidity. The price of such doors depends quite strongly on the type of veneer used for their decoration, and the type of veneer does not affect the quality of the door, but only gives the surface of the door leaf, one or another shade and texture. In a company offering a wide range of doors, you can save significant money by getting the opportunity to choose the outer finish of the door leaf.

Hollow (with honeycomb filling) doors with a molded outer panel, incl. masonite. These doors require a more careful attitude to themselves during operation and are less durable. Masonite doors are sold both coated with artificial veneer and primed. Primed doors can be painted in the most unusual way, which makes it possible to give your interior a new look.

Door frames can be made of solid wood, chipboard or MDF. Many buyers prefer an array, but this is sometimes not the best option, because such boxes are more exposed to the risk of dimensional changes during operation. New wood-like materials are superior in physical properties to natural wood, and the outer finish of such a box is made with veneer of the same wood species as the canvas, as a result of which such a box becomes indistinguishable from solid wood. We draw your attention once again to the fact that the technologies for installing boxes from various materials have, each, its own characteristics.

Since it is very difficult to determine the quality of the door leaf during an external visual inspection, and there is no mandatory certification for interior doors, it is recommended to purchase doors of either a well-known brand, or to make a purchase in reputable firms that guarantee the quality of their goods.
