Choosing a place for a septic tank on the site

If there is no central sewage system in your area, you will have to deal with the arrangement of a septic tank. And you should start by choosing a place where it will be located on the site. Don’t think you can put a septic tank anywhere! There are strict regulations, which our advice site will tell you about in detail.

The septic tank, despite its undoubted usefulness and necessity, is a source of environmental danger! Actually, this is a reservoir with sewage, in which they accumulate and are cleaned. A septic tank can be dangerous in case of leakage of sewage that can pollute water, soil, the environment in general, flood buildings and structures.

That is why the rules for placing a septic tank on the site are strictly regulated by sanitary-epidemiological and building standards:

  • Sanpin 2.2.1 / 2.1.1.1200-03.
  • SNiP 2.04.03–85. Sanitary protection zones.
  • SNiP 2.04.02–84. External water supply networks.
  • SNiP 2.04.01–85. Internal sewerage and water supply networks.
  • SanPiN 2.1.5.980–00. Requirements for the protection of surface waters.

Our website sovetov.ru has already provided instructions for installing a septic tank in the country with your own hands. However, then we paid little attention to the choice of a place for its arrangement, trying to cover the installation process in as much detail as possible..

Now we list the basic requirements of the standards that should be followed when placing a septic tank:

  1. As you understand, the most undesirable moment is the ingress of sewage from the tank into clean drinking water! Therefore, if there is a well or a well on your site, the distance to them from the septic tank should be as possible as possible. It’s simple – the further the better. According to the standards we listed, from a septic tank to a well and a well should be at least 30-50 meters.
  2. Natural reservoirs should also be protected from sewage. Therefore, according to the norms, from the septic tank to the reservoir should be at least 30 meters, to the river, where the water is running – 10 meters.
  3. To the foundation of the house and other residential building from the septic tank should be at least 5 meters, and better – 8 meters. You yourself do not want such an unattractive object to be right under the window.!
  4. There must be at least 5 meters to the road from the septic tank.
  5. From the gas pipe – also, 5 meters.
  6. But the sewage system should be separated by at least 10 meters from the drinking water supply system. In this case, the sewerage system should be located below the water supply system in order to minimize the risk of sewage entering the water.
  7. From the foundation of outbuildings to the septic tank, there should be at least a meter, here the rules are more loyal.
  8. Trees should grow at least 3-4 meters from the septic tank, and bushes – at a distance of a meter.
  9. A septic tank should be separated from the fence at least two meters. In this case, be sure to find out what is behind the fence of the neighbors! Perhaps it is on this site that a septic tank cannot be placed, suddenly there is a residential building or a neighbor’s well.

Important! It is clear that the septic tank must be located at a distance from the foundation of the residential building. But at a maximum distance of 15 meters! That is, there should be at least 5 meters from the house to the tank, maximum 15. Otherwise, ensuring the operation of the sewer system, you will have to build additional wells to service the pipes. And these are expenses, labor, a new, not very attractive object on the site. In addition, if the sewer is longer than 8 meters, the risk of blockages increases..

Do not forget to ensure that the sewer pipe slopes about 20 millimeters per meter for natural drainage..

Important! Among other things, if you plan to clean a septic tank, you need a sewer truck to drive up to it.

Why, talking about the distance of the septic tank from the well or well, did we mention such a fairly wide range – from 30 to 50 meters? Because this indicator depends on the type of soil. There are soils that will easily pass impurities, for example, sand, sandy loam. In this case, the standard is 50 meters. For heavy, clayey soils, this distance can be reduced to 30 meters.

We also note such an important point – some owners decide to completely remove the septic tank outside their site. In this way, they try to maintain the correct distance to their house or well. However, according to civil law, off-site construction will be illegal! This is already the seizure of someone else’s land, even if the site is not used by anyone. A septic tank outside the site can be forced to dismantle at the expense of the owner.

Remember that the correct placement of the septic tank, the correct installation of the entire sewer system will guarantee the safety of all residents of a private house. If the site is small and you cannot meet the standards we have listed, you may need to think about additional VOC costs. Yes, local treatment facilities are more expensive, but they carry out a full cycle of liquid waste treatment and therefore are safer.
