Of course, you need to plan a place for a staircase in the house even at the stage of development or selection of a project. It is an important architectural element that also takes up a lot of space. Our advice site decided to deal with the pros and cons of various options for the location of the stairs in a private house.
The portal devoted a lot of articles to stairs. We wrote about metal staircases, and about wooden, and about spiral, separately told you about materials for steps, as well as protection for children. However, at the very first stage, even before the construction of the house, in the course of choosing a project, the owners face the main question: “Where exactly will the stairs to the second floor or the attic be?”.
Let’s immediately indicate that there are only three main types of stairs:
- Input. Actually, this is a porch with steps leading to the front door of the house. Such stairs are needed if the basement is high or the house is located on a hill, a site with a slope;
- Attic and basements. Everything is simple here – these rooms are located at the very top and bottom of the house, otherwise you cannot get there by stairs;
- Interfloor. They connect the first floor with the second, third, with the attic.
The first two types of stairs are strictly tied to the front door, basement and attic. Therefore, in this case, the issue of location is solved simply – where is the entrance door in the house, underground and exit to the attic, there is a staircase. But with interfloor passages it is a little more complicated..
Option one – stairs in the hallway
Why not, if it’s wide enough. All the same, this is a walk-through room, so that an additional opening will not spoil it and will not interfere. The main thing is that the staircase does not block the passages to other rooms from the corridor, is not too large and at the same time remains comfortable.
Option two – stairs in the lobby or hallway
The choice is impeccable. The passage to the second floor immediately meets guests and household members, you can go upstairs to the bedroom or nursery, bypassing the living rooms of the first floor. The room is spacious enough to make the staircase truly front and noticeable. A hanger, a bedside table for shoes and other furnishings for the hall or hallway fit well next to the stairs. Plus, additional storage space can be added under the steps.
Option three – a staircase in an office or home workshop
Eligible for review. But in this case, most often we are talking about a workplace under the stairs, and not a full-fledged office. A walk-through room, small, it has two functions. You need to think carefully whether it will be convenient for the owner of a home office or workshop to work in conditions when someone stomps on the stairs behind his back or over his head.
Option four – stairs in the living room and dining room
Popular accommodation option. The living room is traditionally the largest room in the house. There is always room in the corner for a staircase, especially a spiral one. In this case, it is important that the passage to the second floor stylistically becomes part of the living room decor. In the dining room, it is also quite possible to arrange a staircase, because this room is also common. By the way, the option when exactly the staircase separates the dining area from the kitchen is also found.
Option five – stairs in the kitchen
There are two ways here – either to make the kitchen spacious enough so that the stairs fit comfortably and do not interfere with cooking, or, on the contrary, to equip the kitchen directly under the steps, literally squeeze it into this corner. The second option is used if there is enough space under the stairs for a work area, and additional storage and dining area can be organized elsewhere.
Staircase to the second floor in the bedroom or nursery, let’s face it, is not an option. Such placement can be found in two-story studio apartments when there is no other way out. When planning and choosing a project for a private house, they always try to place the stairs outside of personal space, and bedrooms and children’s rooms are just such closed areas for strangers..
