# How to calculate the size of the fireplace depending on the area of the room

A fireplace is not just a decoration for a room. He is able to heat, heat it. Of course, if it corresponds to the area of the room. Our tips site will give you a simple and straightforward calculation that allows you to accurately determine the size of the fireplace for a particular room in the house..

If you make a mistake with the size of the fireplace for a particular room, two options are possible:

1. A too small fireplace will not warm the room. It will be just a decorative element, moreover, not too noticeable in a sufficiently large area of the room..
2. A too large fireplace will lead to drafts from the firebox. And it will take up a lot of space, which is also not good for a modest room in terms of area, non-functional.

Let’s clarify right away that the fireplace portal, its framing, can be of any size. This will not affect the efficiency of heating the room. It is important for us to calculate the dimensions of the furnace hole, the “heart” of the hearth. The ratio of the firebox to the area of the room adopted by experts is 1:50.

Let’s take a simple example – a fireplace will be installed in a spacious living room of 20 square meters. In this case, the firebox opening must be 20/50 = 0.4 m2.

But that’s not all. It is necessary to determine the height, width and depth of the fireplace insert. The ratio of height to width should be 2: 3. Remembering school algebra and solving a simple equation: 2x 3x = 4000 cm2, x = 25.8 cm.

Let’s multiply and round off, because it is not necessary to calculate the dimensions of the fireplace insert to the millimeter. It turns out that the optimal dimensions of the furnace hole are 52 centimeters in height and 77 in width. Let’s check: 52 77 = 4004 cm2. Not exactly 0.4 m2, but this is the closest meaning.

Now it remains to calculate the depth of the fireplace insert. It also refers to height as 2: 3. We already know the height, we believe: (52 2) / 3 = 34.67 cm. Round up to 35 centimeters.

You cannot choose the depth of the fireplace insert by eye, this is fraught with consequences:

• Too much depth will lead to the fact that all the heat will go into the fireplace, into the chimney.
• Too shallow depth will lead to smoke in the room.

The dimensions of the chimney for the fireplace, whose firebox area is calculated by us 4000 cm2, should be 270-400 centimeters, that is, 10-15 times less. The calculation technique, as you can see, is simple. You can simply substitute the value of the area of your room in which you decided to install a fireplace, and carry out simple calculations using the formulas.

Important! An electric fireplace should also fit the size of the room. The proportion is the same – 1:50, but we are talking about the entire facade of the electric hearth, and not about the firebox. For a bedroom, for example, with an area of 15 m2 an electric fireplace with dimensions of 50×60 centimeters will be enough.

Recall that the portal has already written about how to build a brick fireplace with your own hands.
