Profiled membranes: features and scope

Profiled membranes are a specialized type of waterproof membrane which feature a grooved or profiled surface that allows for improved adhesion of applied coatings, such as elastomeric, and are an ideal solution for waterproofing foundations, decks, roof membranes and exterior walls. The distinct feature of profiled membranes is that they provide greater adhesion for applied coatings and hence require less labour to install than traditional waterproof membranes. The pre-profiled design of membraes eliminates the requirement for a mechanical fastening system which can enhance the aesthetics of the surface and offer superior protection and flexibility. Furthermore, they are available in various designs and configurations to meet the individual needs of the project. The advantages of profiled membranes include cost-effectiveness, ease of installation, longer service life, and superior waterproofing performance.

The profiled membrane is made of high density polyethylene. The most noticeable feature is that projections and rounded spikes are formed on the lower layer in the factory. Sliding polyethylene film and geotextile fabric serve as additional layers. The standard height of the tabs on the main layer is 8 millimeters. The thickness of the membrane itself does not exceed 1 millimeter.

The membrane is sold in rolls. The standard size is 2 meters wide and 20 meters long. Such a roll weighs 24 kilograms. Cost โ€“ from 70 rubles per square meter.

The profiled membrane has several advantages:

  • The service life declared by the manufacturer is 50 years. In practice, the membranes have not been used for so long, again, the material is relatively new. But tests show that there is every reason to count on its durability..
  • The membrane is capable of replacing granular drainage materials, allowing owners to save money and speed up the construction process.
  • Has excellent burst shear resistance.
  • Not afraid of chemicals, fungi, mold, ultraviolet radiation.
  • Installation can be carried out at any time of the year, even if the humidity on the surface is high.
  • The installation process itself is simple, unlike roofing material, it does not require the use of open fire.

The scope of application of the profiled membrane is quite wide:

  • Arrangement of a soft blind area.
  • As a waterproofing foundation, to protect it from water and tree roots. Used on both vertical and horizontal surfaces.
  • Basement waterproofing.
  • For renovation of damp walls.
  • When arranging a flat roof, the portal has already written about its insulation.
  • For waterproofing basements and cellars.

If the mounting surface is wide, then the membrane tapes are overlapped, fastened together with a special self-adhesive tape or hot air. The membrane is fixed to horizontal surfaces with dowels.

According to experts, now profiled membranes are gradually replacing other waterproofing materials in the field of arrangement of foundations and blind areas. They have many advantages..
