Endova on the roof: types and arrangement

If the ridge crowns the entire roof structure, then the valley (gutter) connects the slopes that are placed on adjacent roof sections. This is the angle, the line of intersection of two planes. Endova is formed not only at the junction of two roof slopes, but also when the slope touches the wall. It turns out such an internal corner, not protruding like a ridge, but as if recessed in the connection of large roof elements.

There are two main types of valleys:

• Lower. Fits under the roofing. This additional roof element has mounting folds along the edges, this helps to prevent leaks, water ingress under the roof;
• Upper. This is not only a protective, but also a decorative element, because the upper valley is located above the roofing material and is clearly visible. Like the lower one, the upper valley protects the joint from precipitation and reliably hides it.

Endova is a very important element of the roof! It is in such places of joints that snow accumulates most of all. In addition, the bulk of the water flows along the valley line during melting snow and rains. It is this element that ensures the tightness of the junction points of the slopes, avoids leaks and other problems during the operation of the roof.

Endova by its construction can be:

• Closed. In this case, the sheets of roofing material abut against each other, closing the joint;
• Intertwined. The sheets of the two slopes are intertwined, superimposed on each other, the design will be more complicated;
• Open. The easiest option. Between the joints of the slopes, an open space remains, which is occupied by the outer valley. Most often in this case, a curved metal sheet is used.

Important! An open valley does not need additional waterproofing, but a closed and interwoven one does. In addition, the open valley provides self-cleaning of the roof – rainwater and snow flow down, go down under their own weight.

As for the features of arranging valleys on roofs with different coatings, several important points should be noted:

• For the valley on the metal roofing, special metal corners are used, which are sold in modules with a length of two meters. It is important to choose this element to match the color of the roof. The lathing at the site of the valley installation is often nailed – twice as often as on the rest of the roof to strengthen the junction. The groove is mounted from the bottom up;

• If corrugated board is used, then additional lathing is also laid under the valley, the strips go along the innermost corner, butt to each other. Waterproofing is required on top of the crate boards;
• Additional longitudinal boards will be needed at the junction of the slopes and in the case of using ondulin or tiles. Silicone gaskets should be used to prevent water infiltration and snow dust ingress under the slope joints. The waterproofing membrane is attached with double-sided tape and with a construction stapler.

Roofers unanimously consider the valley to be the most complex element of the entire roof structure. The service life of the entire roof depends on its reliability and correct installation..

Important! It is imperative to install a drain under the valley, because it is in this place of the roof that the largest amount of water will drain down.

For the arrangement of the valley, it is advisable to use special roofing elements, which are recommended by the manufacturers of one or another material for the roof. For example, a professional end carpet suitable for shingles. Or special metal corners, which we have already written about.
