Tool bags

In order to facilitate, speed up, and also make safe work at any height (from a stool and much higher), tool bags are used, they are also assembly bags, they are also bags and pouches for tools.

Imagine you need to hang a bookshelf. What is needed for this? A drill with a drill, plastic dowels or wooden plugs, screws, a screwdriver, a tape measure, a pencil … and, perhaps, another level for greater horizontalness. Then we will climb onto a stool, estimate-measure-mark-drill-screw-back-move-admire …

In general, everything is so. But bad luck, while looking at what happened, I forgot where I left the pencil with a ruler after drawing the markup (and after all, when I got down, I put it in the most conspicuous place!). Found. He swore. I continued to work. While drilling holes, I dropped the screwdriver: I had to go down from the stool, put the drill and pick up the screwdriver, while the screws hurt the thigh through the thin fabric of the pocket … These are such small, seemingly insignificant details of the routine process, and how they spoil the mood and deprive a large portion satisfaction from a job well done.

We complicate the task. There are twenty-two bookshelves, they are to be hung at a height of three meters throughout the hangar (modern design, high-tech style), “and so that in three hours it will be done, otherwise the electricians need to mount the lamps before six in the evening, throw the wiring and alarm check. Tomorrow morning the object will be handed over! ”… You won’t run up and down once again. And the required number of screws may simply not fit into your pants pocket. And for the installation of some cunning “gusset”, in addition to a screwdriver, you will also need a wrench … one for “thirteen”, the other for “fourteen” …

What’s in the hangar! To fasten the television antenna on the dacha roof – again a task not for the fifth grade. An antenna in one hand, and with the other hand you can hold on to the ridge or lean on the roof slope. Awkward movement – the hammer slipped out from the belt, flew down … did you hurt anyone? Glory tt-e! …

And now, when, thanks to the told “horror stories”, our reader asked one question: “What to do?” – it’s time to remember the simplest devices known from time immemorial – tool bags, or in the English way – toolbag. Tool bags are produced in many countries. They are most readily used by workers and specialists in the United States and Western Europe. In Russia, this product still seems exotic: “boots are safer in battle” – the character of a famous film used to say. However, all products shown in the illustrations for this article are Russian-made.

There are two main materials in “tool bag making”: leather and nylon. Both have pluses and minuses, there are supporters and opponents.

Leather – natural material, thick and durable, not pierced by a sharp point or cut by a blade, retains its shape and volume by itself, is very durable in operation. Finally, it is known for its long and glorious tradition of use. On the other hand, we feel the own weight of the leather product, it does not tolerate wetting, it is difficult to clean, the choice of colors is extremely small. Quite expensive.

Nylon – modern synthetic material, looks like fabric, but much denser, lightweight and durable. Easy to wash. It happens in all colors of the rainbow, which allows you to select products to match the color of workwear, in a corporate style. 1–2 times cheaper than leather counterparts. On the other hand, it is easily pierced and cut through, shaggy in the seams, the service life is short – about six months. There are also things made of tarpaulin, artificial leather, leatherette.

The actual tool bags are mainly of two types: shoulder and belt.

The first type is on a shoulder strap with a zip top. The simplest option is a canvas “gas mask” bag; due to its low cost, it is quite widely used, although it wears out after a short time, and even faster loses its appearance. The content is “in bulk”. However, the idea lends itself to improvement. If you take dense nylon instead of tarpaulin, then the product turns out to be more beautiful and more durable. Functionality can be improved by dividing the interior into compartments and adding slots on the partitions. Although the placement of the tool in such sockets is problematic – the walls are soft, they easily wrinkle.
The addition of a frame and rigid inserts removes the problem; the result is a shoulder tool bag that looks more like a popular business case or small travel suitcase. Although it costs accordingly. A leather bag of this class vividly resembles a photo-reporter’s wardrobe trunk, but is not popular because of its high cost. A logical continuation of the series is plastic tool boxes, but their description deserves a separate article..

The second type of tool bags are belt bags. The belt bag is a small tablet with slots and pockets of different sizes. The first thing that comes to mind when looking at her is a “bandolier”. Attaches to the waist belt. In numerous compartments of such a bag, you can arrange the necessary set of tools in a certain way, in a convenient order. And then you don’t have to dig, by touching the “slot”, besides, it will be possible to save a lot of time. In the pockets of the bag we pour a supply of fasteners, in appearance and size. Everything didn’t fit? – add one or two additional pouches.

Professionals, as a rule, select “handbags” according to their specialization. For example, a drywall installer will take a battery drill holster and one or two small pouches for self-tapping screws. An electrician will prefer a pouch with a large number of small sockets in order to conveniently sort out different-sized screwdrivers, wire cutters, and round nose pliers on the belt. The roofer will choose a belt bag that has a spacious pocket for nails, and two more loops – always two! – for a hammer (for roofers, hammers “work in pairs”).

For any kind of repair in everyday life, the so-called “assembly belt” is best suited: a double belt-bag sewn to the belt. It is the most common and known to almost every home craftsman. In fact, it is a modified apron that has two large pockets, two or more medium pockets, a dozen sockets for small tools, one or two hammer loops. This design of the bag does not have a pronounced specialization, it is convenient in many cases.

So, to hang the bookshelf, we need: a drill with a drill, plastic dowels or wooden plugs, screws, a screwdriver, a tape measure, a pencil, a level to make it more horizontal. We’ll put everything in a tool bag so as not to climb onto the stool again.
