Methods for painting PVC windows

Painting PVC windows is a great way to update the look of a home without a large investment. Not only is it more economical than replacing the entire window, but it also has the potential to update the look of a room or outdoor area. This post outlines some of the steps for painting PVC windows, including preparation, choosing paint, and applying the paint. With the right supplies and a bit of extra care, painting PVC windows can be a straightforward process that produces impressive results.

In the 21st century, PVC window manufacturers offer the buyer a fairly large selection of colors for application on the surface of plastic windows. From solid monochrome colors (e.g. red, cyan, blue, green) to various wood decors. Among the unusual colors offered, say, a snow-white rough or structured color.

Methods for painting PVC windows

In the warehouse, window sellers always have a certain set of colors of PVC windows, which are in the greatest demand among buyers. Also, the consumer can choose an additional window color according to a special catalog. Windows of these colors are usually available in the warehouses of manufacturing companies and are delivered to the buyer on order. Starting from a certain amount, at the request of the consumer, profiles of almost any color can be produced. Colored windows are typically 15 percent more expensive than regular white windows.

There are several ways to paint PVC windows:

  • Bulk painted windows (standard white or brown).
  • Co-extrusion profile painting, which allows to apply acrylic coating on the outside of windows in different color tones.
  • Windows that are laminated with acrylic film, either plain or with drawings, stylized, say, “wood-like”.
  • Profile varnishing or window surface finishing with acrylic varnish.
  • Spray painting of windows.
  • Window profiles that are made from monotonous colored colored PVC are usually snow-white or brown in color, and they are called painted bulk windows. Dark colored windows have a number of characteristics compared to light colored windows..

Firstly, the outer layer of dark windows must be carefully covered with acrylic films, this, as experts say, is due to the instability of many colored dyes to aggressive environmental influences (when painting polyvinyl chloride in bulk).

Secondly, the dark color of the profiles leads to an increased absorption of thermal energy, these profiles reveal a number of functional disorders, the problems are solved only by using reinforcing inserts. That is why it is important to note once again that the use of reinforcing liners is necessary for all windows that are mass-painted in any dark colors, because this avoids the appearance of various deformations / deflections of these windows under the constant influence of high temperatures..

The most reliable and durable way of painting windows is, perhaps, the co-extrusion method, this method arose as a result of the combination of co-extrusion of two materials – acrylic and polyvinyl chloride. Extrusion of polymers is a method for the production of profiled products of considerable length from plastic and rubber; this method consists in the constant squeezing of the softened resource through holes of a certain section. This method allows you to make an acrylic coating on the street side of windows in different color tones (on the home side, the profiles, as before, will be white).

The acrylic layer has a thickness of about 0.5 millimeters, the coating is scratch-resistant, because the specific characteristics of acrylic give the outer surface of the window extraordinary hardness, and create a single whole with the window base. Moreover, the acrylic layer has significant wear resistance to aggressive weathering. When scratches appear on such a surface, and sooner or later it happens to any materials, they can be removed without problems by grinding. The acrylic surface is not threatened by local heating of the windows, including under constant sunlight, the coating is protected from peeling or cracking. Low sensitivity of the material to heat neutralizes any problems associated with possible thermal expansion of window structures.

For decorative painting of PVC windows, for example, when styling for wood, the method of laminating the outer surface of PVC windows with a wear-resistant film is practiced, the outer side of such a film is highly resistant to all types of weathering, as well as to sunlight, therefore, the windows retain the brightness of colors for a long time. Laminate, as a rule, reproduces the integral structure of wood: it imitates light or dark wood of natural oak, as well as mahogany, however, many other very different colors of acrylic films are used.

PVC windows can be laminated with the aforementioned acrylic films on both sides. Production technology: profiles are heated to the required temperature and covered with a small layer of glue, after which, using thermal activation, the film is attached to the window using special pressure rollers. Of course, during the production cycle, adhesion is subject to the most rigorous control. As a rule, brown PVC profiles are laminated with films with wood grain decoration on both sides.

Decorating with acrylic varnish or varnishing is an additional way to decorate the surface of PVC windows. As a result of varnishing, the outer surface of the window becomes more matte, velvety in appearance. Varnishing is carried out by applying oven-dried varnish to the window surface. The special texture of such a coating, even its slight roughness, is very pleasant to the touch and to the eye. The sold color gamut is extremely wide, which is why this method of window decoration allows you to obtain unusual colors of the surface of PVC windows.

Using spraying it is also possible to paint polyvinyl chloride profiles in different colors. For spraying, acrylic varnishes are usually used, consisting of two components.
