Rules for painting a wooden window

There are two reasons why you need to paint a window: if it is new, has never been painted, and if it has been painted for a long time, the paint has lost its original appearance, and the window needs to be updated.

Painting any window starts with preparatory work. For a new window, preparation takes place in three stages: grinding, impregnation and priming. For the convenience of work, it is better to remove the frames from the canopies and place them horizontally at a height of about one meter. With the help of a fine sandpaper, all roughness and burrs must be removed from the tree to a perfectly smooth state. Of course, in the factory, a deeper impregnation of wood is carried out using methods that are inaccessible to home conditions, but at home this step should not be ignored either. You can carry out surface treatment with a special impregnation, which is sold in hardware stores.

The next step is to prime the window. It is carried out to create a layer on the wood that promotes better adhesion of the paint to the wood. If the window is supposed to be varnished, then a glazing coating is used as a primer, which will beautifully highlight the pattern of the wood structure. For the primer of the window, which will be simply painted, use a regular primer or drying oil.

The final stage is painting the window, carried out after the primer has dried. For painting, from all existing paints, you can choose the classic version – alkyd window enamel for interior and exterior work, traditionally white, but if you so desire, you can also use a different color. For unpainted new wood, one coat of paint or varnish will not be enough, so when the first coat is completely dry, a second coat should be applied to give the wood a full and even color.

Most often, you have to paint a window that has already been beautifully painted, and perhaps more than once. Its painting technology is different from painting a new window. It will also be more convenient to work with the frames removed. First you need to carefully inspect the windows, remove the fittings from them – latches and latches and remove unnecessary nails and screws. After that, the window must be cleaned of old paint with a scraper or spatula. But it will not be possible to remove all the paint in this way, so the remaining paint must be covered with a special paint remover, and wait until it starts to lag behind the tree, and then it is easy to remove with a spatula. Most likely, this procedure will need to be repeated more than once, since very old layers may not immediately succumb to the peeling process. If it is absolutely impossible to remove the old paint and you have to leave it, then you need to clean up such places with sandpaper so that they do not stand out above the surface of the tree. Now the frames need to be cleaned with medium emery cloth and covered with linseed oil.

When the linseed oil is dry, the frames are ready to be putty. First you need to putty deep defects and let them dry, and then putty all the parts completely. Frames are putty in order to level their surface and give a beautiful initial look. The dried putty is cleaned with fine emery cloth, and the frames are inspected. There are usually areas that require reapplication of the putty, so this process must be repeated until the surface is smooth and even to the touch..

The window is now fully prepared for painting. They paint it with the same paints as in the case of the new window – alkyd enamels. Usually one coat of paint is sufficient for renovated windows, but if necessary, paint can be applied again when the first coat is completely dry. It is not recommended to varnish the repaired window, because traces of repair will be visible through the varnish.

There are some tips that will make it easier to paint your windows. When choosing a brush, it is recommended to give preference to hair-like flat small flutes over round brushes. They are more convenient for painting window frames, especially glazing beads near glass. It is better to have at hand several of these flutes of different widths. It can be problematic to paint a window so as not to stain the glass with paint, putty or primer, so they can be protected with construction adhesive tape by gluing it along the edge of the glass close to the wooden parts of the window. After completing all the work, the tape is easily removed, and the glass remains clean. It is necessary to ensure that the paint does not get on the rubber seals, because they will lose their elasticity due to this.
