The drug Surolan (Surolan) refers to funds for the treatment of otitis externa and dermatitis in cats and dogs. In international trade, it is found under the names Miconazole, Prednisolone or Polymyxin B. Pharmacological properties

Surolan is an antimicrobial and antifungal drug, has a wide spectrum of activity, has anti-allergic and anti-inflammatory effects. Fungicidal and bactericidal drug effectively acts against:

• dermatophytes and fungi of the genus Candida, Trichophyton, Malassezia, Mycrisporum;
• Klebsiella;
• Escherichia coli;
• Salmonella spp .;
• Pseudomonas spp .;
• Enterobacter spp.

Miconazole is a synthetic derivative of imidazole, does not allow ergosterol (a component of the cell membrane and plasma membrane of fungi) to be synthesized, and changes the permeability of cell walls of gram-positive bacteria. Polymyxin B violates the integrity of the cytoplasmic membrane of a bacterial cell, acts bactericidal. Prednisolone acetate is a synthetic glucocorticoid, acts locally – has anti-exudative anti-inflammatory effects, relieves itching, accelerates the healing of damaged tissues.

According to the degree of danger, the product belongs to low-hazard substances (hazard class 4), does not have resorptive-toxic, locally-irritating, sensitizing effects if the dosages are observed. For external use, only prednisone is absorbed, miconazole and polymyxin have a local antimicrobial, antifungal effect. Biotransformation of prednisone occurs in the liver, metabolites are excreted in the urine, feces.

Indications for use

The medication is indicated for use in cats and dogs as ear drops and for the treatment of skin diseases. Indications for use of the drug in veterinary medicine are:

• acute and chronic otitis externa (inflammation of the external auditory canal and auricle);
• dermatitis, pyoderma;
• dermatophytosis, infected wounds;
• abscess;
• skin diseases of bacterial and fungal origin.

Dosage and administration

Depending on the type of disease, severity of infection, age, weight of the animal, the method of application of Surolan is determined. For cats and dogs, the use is approximately the same – only the dosages differ. In case of otitis media and damage to the ears, the product is used for instillation, in case of injuries or wounds – for local application to the skin of an animal. An overdose of Surolan has not been established. If you skip processing, you need to make up for the loss as soon as possible.

For dogs

With otitis media, the suspension is instilled into the affected ear for 3-5 drops. Before this, the ear canal must be carefully hygienic for cleaning ear wax. So that the medicine is evenly distributed, it falls into the focus of inflammation, the base of the ear should be lightly massaged. To prevent the animal from spraying the product when shaking its head, it must be fixed for several minutes. Treatment for otitis media is carried out twice a day until the symptoms disappear, plus another 2-3 days. The general course of treatment should not exceed 15 days. Dosage and regimen for the treatment of otodectosis (ear scabies) remain the same.

For cats

In case of skin diseases, Surolan drops are applied to the entire damaged surface, after having previously cleaned it with adjacent areas of wool, necrotic tissue, dirt, pus and wound exudate. Processing of the skin is carried out 1-2 times / day with a course of no more than 21 days. To prevent the animal from licking the preparation, a muzzle, a neck collar are put on it or the jaw is fixed with braid, which is removed after the suspension is dried.

Side effects and contraindications

It is forbidden to use the drug with individual intolerance to the animal components of the composition, with perforation of the eardrum. Possible side effects of the agent are partial hearing loss (replenished independently after a few days), allergic reactions to the skin (rash, itching, redness). The drug is not prescribed to productive animals. There is no information on the interaction of drops based on prednisolone acetate with other drugs.

Surolan is stored in a closed package in a dry, dark place at a temperature of 0-25 degrees, the product should be kept away from food, animal feed. Shelf life is two years, after opening the bottle – three months. Precautions for people:
