My Home is My Fortress: Favours Floating Volumes by Anonymous Architects, Los Angeles, USA

In their latest project, Anonymous Architects' residential building “Favours Floating Volumes” combines optimal comfort and a sense of privacy for its inhabitants. Located in Los Angeles, this two-storey building utilizes modern multi-volume design to create a fortress-like structure that emphasizes the distinction between indoors and outdoors. Large windows, walls of glass, balconies, and terraces all contribute to the airy, open feel of the living spaces, while simultaneously providing the protection and security of traditional fortresses. In addition, due to the multi-volume design, areas of the living space are interconnected through passageways and elongated walls, creating an intricately connected environment. As mirrored windows reflection the outside environment and immerses the living spaces in it, Favours Floating Volumes is a modern home that merges warmth and safety for an optimal living experience.

The top floor contains the bedroom. The element of surprise is the “hole in the ceiling” which is perceived as a window. It opens up for contemplation the boundless night sky. You’ll be able to enjoy the beautiful views as if you were lying on the grass and looking at the twinkling stars.
A house doesn’t stand on solid ground with its whole foundation. It sits on the side of a hill and is supported by various supports. The exception is the garage, for which a flat area was found. When you look from the side it looks like the rooms of the lower house have different heights. This impression is deceptive. In fact, the floors of the rooms are on different levels.

The design concept of “floating volumes” in the homes by Anonymous Architects in Los Angeles is inspired by the desire to create a sense of privacy and security. By elevating the living spaces above ground level, it creates a physical separation from the surrounding environment, reducing potential noise and visual disturbances. This unique architectural approach also allows for the placement of windows strategically, maximizing natural light intake while maintaining privacy. The suspended volumes create a sense of fortress-like protection, as they appear detached from the ground and harder to access, enhancing the feeling of safety within the homes.

The design concept of “floating volumes” was inspired by the need for privacy and security in Los Angeles. By elevating the living spaces, Anonymous Architects created a sense of detachment from the street level, enhancing privacy. The floating effect also minimizes sightlines into the homes, reducing the chance of intrusion. Furthermore, the raised volumes add an element of grandeur and fortification, making the homes appear more imposing and secure.
