Probably everyone would like to have next to his home a cozy corner in which you can relax your mind and body. The water garden of Claude Monet, the great French impressionist painter, is one of the best examples of such a place.
The artist first chose to beautify the approaches to the house by getting rid of what seemed to him to be a dismal avenue of cypresses and fir trees. Next to the stumps left by the trees, climbing briars were planted, which over time turned the place into a tunnel with beautiful vaults.
Guided by his taste Monet selected plants so as to achieve the desired color combinations, transitions and contrasts.
In 1893 another swampy plot of land next door was purchased. After drainage, the area was connected to a creek that flowed nearby. The result was a small pond with winding banks.
Across it the painter has thrown a bridge in the Japanese style, which over time was covered with lilac and white lace of wisteria. This was the beginning of a very beautiful and unusual water garden.
