A box of newspaper and magazine tubes โ€“ a weaving workshop

This post explores the unique features of a newspaper and magazine weaving workshop by introducing a box of tubes. Using these tubes, weavers can create beautiful and unique items such as baskets, bags, hats, and more, with increased speed and efficiency, compared to traditional weaving. As a result, the box of tubes allows weavers to finish their projects more quickly, make larger items, and travel easily to and from workshops, including transporting their finished pieces home. This workshop offers weavers an innovative way to craft items from newspaper and magazine pages, and opens up exciting opportunities for creative expression.

Previously, woven items were used mainly in villages. Now, similar products are often used in urban apartments. Here is one of them โ€“ a box of magazine and newspaper tubes. The sequence of actions for its implementation is described in detail in this master class with photos.

How to do: sequence and technique

To create a voluminous craft you will need:

  • newspaper tubes โ€“ 47 pieces;
  • journal โ€“ 214 pcs.;
  • two sheets of cardboard measuring 30ร—27 cm;
  • double sided tape;
  • PVA glue;
  • clothespins โ€“ 5 pcs.;
  • impregnation โ€“ wood varnish.

They lay out 38 magazine strips on a sheet of cardboard and fix them with tape. Stick on top of the second sheet of cardboard and the bottom is ready.

Prepare the bottom of the future crafts

When weaving the first line, all the tubes are lifted โ€“ the racks are up, they pass another strip. Then they switch to newspaper ones, add a third to them and perform 2 strips with a โ€œropeโ€. Weave the second strip in the opposite direction, so the pattern will look more beautiful.

Weave the first line

Next pass 5 lines with simple weaving.

We make five rows

A checkerboard pattern is made with a single tube, smoothed to a flat state. Two paper legs are braided on three strips upwards, a square is obtained, they move smoothly to the next, weave three rows.

We make a chess pattern

We make chess squares in three rows

Gradually increase the size up

After weaving, the tube is returned to the first two paper legs, then repeat the previous steps.

Accuracy is important in work

Perform squares in a checkerboard pattern, all should get three rows of squares. The upper strip of the pattern is smeared with PVA glue, fixed with a clothespin.

Each rope is triple

The simple weaving of 5 strips continues, then they switch to the newspaper, perform a rope. In this model, three more branches are executed, so a third tube is added.

We encircle the racks of the box

Each branch in turn is wrapped around the โ€œlegsโ€ of the product, newspaper gently lie in any direction. At the end, they put on the magazine again, pass two lines of simple weaving. The ends of the weaving branch are cut, glued and secured with a clothespin.

We carry out two rows of tubes

Glue on top of the branch

Having stepped back up to 3-4 cm upwards, weaving continues anew, 4 rows pass, perform a rope in two balls.

We retreat a few centimeters and continue

To finish the work, you need to weave the ends of the racks with each other.

The ends of the racks are connected

Now the whole structure is coated with PVA glue, allowed to dry, after which all the sticking ends are cut off.

Coat the surface with glue

The finished product is painted in two stages with varnish โ€“ impregnation for wood. The bottom and rows are covered with the color of the rosewood, and everything else โ€“ with a touch of walnut.

The finishing touch - varnish the product

Can also be decorated with ribbon threaded through racks.

Decorate the finished craft
