House overlooking the river: Captain Ballard Cut’s Fortress by Prentiss Architects, Seattle, Washington

This captivating house, designed by Prentiss Architects in Seattle, Washington, overlooks the river. Built on the site of an old Army fort, it is a fitting tribute to Captain Ballard Cut and his legacy. The house stands out due to its modern design and expansive views of the river, combining the area's rich history with a contemporary aesthetic. Its surrounding landscape was carefully thought out to include a private beach area and even a car ramp that leads up to the terrace. In addition, the house incorporates natural elements that connect it to its location, such as stone cladding, cedar, and the use of glazed walls. With an emphasis on sustainability, the house is also outfitted with energy efficient windows and insulations. Ultimately, this residence embodies the juxtaposition of past and present, making it a unique and admirable example of contemporary architecture.

The unusual building, hidden on the east side in dense greenery, was built by Prentiss Architects. The house sits on a difficult part of a steep slope. To make it spacious enough, it was decided to place the main structure, which is larger than the footprint of the foundation, on a concrete foundation. It makes the house seem to float in the air. The second floor is laid out in the same way.

A beautiful house with a wooden facade

Our readers would probably agree it’s the perfect home for a captain who’s been sailing the seas for 14 years and finally decided to settle down on solid ground. A stairway ramp to the “side” of the house towers over a thicket of fragrant flowering shrubs. The house itself resembles a ship sailing through the garden.
