Heidi spotted this home more than eight years ago when she took a landscape architecture class. She dreamed of one day buying and restoring it.
Years later, when she was living in Brooklyn with her artist husband Sam and two sons, she got a call from a friend that the house was for sale. She came to inspect it, and soon bought.
Despite the fact that it was her dream home, a lot of work had to be put into the renovation. Neighbors thought she was crazy to take on such a big project – the Taco Bell house, as it was nicknamed.
It needed a new roof and floors, structural updates, and a major repainting. Sam and Heidi gradually renovate the house. The kitchen is not yet finished, but the dwelling is finally livable.
Originally, every room in the house was painted a different color, and a very intense one at that. The living room was purple, the dining room was blue and the bathroom was pink. The trim was also dark and ornate.
After repainting in lighter and lighter colors, the house was instantly transformed.
Once the kitchen renovation is complete, there are plans to add another bathroom and separate the studio from the back patio, which is now overgrown with bamboo.
There are still many years of work to be done. Sam and Heidi like to go out in the morning with a cup of coffee and knock down the bamboo stems that grew overnight. They’re content with that before they embark on new global projects.
The updated home is very cozy and beautiful without losing its authenticity. How would you like to restore it??
