When the need for a place to live forced people to move into abandoned industrial buildings, the loft style appeared, with elements of industrial premises and objects in black metal. On a lakeshore in Idaho, Olson Kundig Architects built an entirely new and unusual home in this adaptive style.
The Mountain Residence is a natural charm of wooded steep mountains, clear water and simple, slightly rough shapes of the facade and flat roof. The architects didn’t just erect the building, but blended it into the nature of the shoreline, taking advantage of the slope and the opening views.
The outer wall is an original design that rotates around the central axis of a large metal frame and opens up to the slope leading to the shore. From the living room you can admire the magical view of the lake of the Moon Craters. So nicknamed the chain of ponds, almost round in shape and with high rocky shores.
Keeping with the style, the walls inside are not plastered. Frames of black metal I-beams in different sections, cement floor. Upholstered furniture from the designers is made in the form of a set of rectangular cushions placed on pallets instead of a base.
The small bedroom on the second floor is separated by a glass partition from the lobby. An opening in the wall is closed by a sliding shutter. Through stained-glass windows in metal frames from the bed you can see the lake and the opposite shore.

Underneath the bedroom is a bar and a TV screen. You can watch the news and sports while sitting with drinks in deep armchairs, or just chat with friends.
A home in the evening from the side. Mountain Residence has no standard doors, this iron one is only two stories high and stands at an angle to the wall. Behind the threshold you can see the wooden staircase, and outside there is a small platform and steps made of flat stones towards the backyard.
The entire first floor is heated with a large fireplace that is adapted for gas and solid fuel. In this case, the wood is burning. The hearth is made of large-diameter welded sheets of 10 mm rolled steel and autogenously cut a door in it, secured on ball hangers. The designers purposely left it marked with white paint and a black surface. A built-in burner can be turned on and heat the entire house if desired, as the metal structure and hood run through all three floors.
The fireplace also serves as a separator for the large common area on the first floor. Behind it on the right are armchairs and coffee tables in front of the TV and mini bar. This place is highlighted by a carpet with a long pile. On the left is the kitchen and dining room in front. Living room sofas stand in front of an open fire pit.
Steps made of flat slate stones lead to water. It’s fenced on two sides by large boulders. When viewed from the pier, the house and the beach chairs with their little tables on the beach seem like representatives of different worlds. Calm water reflects everything on the shore.
