Let’s embrace folk wisdom: Frozen City by Vector Architects – Oriental philosophy through the eyes of an urban dweller, Hefei, China

Frozen City" by Vector Architects in Hefei, China, embraces folk wisdom to deliver an oriental philosophy from an urban dweller's point of view. The architecture features unique visuals and textures, blending modern and traditional elements to bring warmth and comfort to city dwellers. It utilizes natural ingredients, including raw brick and wood, to create a layered and vibrant space expressing a distinct sense of place. The building also utilizes solid and perforated walls to maximize ventilation and optimize energy efficiency. The unconventional design of the building is eye-catching and inviting, evoking a feeling of peace and belonging for the citizens of Hefei.

In spite of the abundance of glass and concrete, the careful attitude towards nature and ecology plays an important role in the project. The design is aimed at noise and dust protection, air and water filtration and plenty of natural light.

“The Frozen City is a group of detached buildings connected by a common corridor. The exterior of the complex is made of glass and metal mesh, which provides a good overview and natural light. Natural wood paneling in rich colors was used for the cladding. According to the developers, this is what buildings would look like if they were created by nature, not by man.

Another spectacular design idea is the use of trees in the landscape. They are designed like building structures: with a base, foundation and supports. The illusion of an artificial concrete sculpture waking up to life and blooming!

This is the Oriental monad – the symbol of the unity of opposites: an amazing city with growing houses and stone trees. The author and designer of this original house is Vector Architects agency.
