Dutch Style house projects: Joyce & Jeroen, an old respectable mansion and modernist design by Personal Architecture, Hague, The Netherlands

Joyce & Jeroen's vintage house

The staff at Personal Architecture said they had to reinforce the foundation and structure of the building to prevent the renovation from turning into a trivial facelift. It opened up a wide range of design possibilities.

The combination of an ambitious vision of the project and unlimited trust of the clients helped to create the idea of reconstruction. Customer input, of course, was a big part of the decision, including the preservation of the period brickwork and window molding and the homeโ€™s distinctive layout. But there was still anxiety about the outcome of the combination of the buildingโ€™s antique construction and modern construction techniques.

The main facade of the house has been restored and the rear wall completely demolished and replaced by an 11-meter high glass wall. In this way, thanks to a clever architectural solution, the house has a space of three floors high, giving free access to light, air movement.

The interplay of empty spaces, floors, interior terraces and a transparent wall creates a kind of intrigue between the exterior and the interior of the house. A cross between classic architecture and contemporary design is seen throughout.

A new spiral staircase connects all four stories and adds a fresh dynamic touch, while also allowing you to divide the home between you and your guests. The old stairwell in the foyer was left as a reminder from the past. Clever remodeling added living space and more rooms. Finally, the project is crowned by the original roof-terrace with a Jacuzzi.

The house promises customers something new and different. And for passersby itโ€™s no different from the other buildings on Merlenstraat.

The key elements of the Joyce & Jeroen house that combine old-world charm and modernist design are the architectural details, material choices, and the integration of sustainable features. Personal Architecture blends these contrasting styles seamlessly by respecting the existing historical elements while introducing clean lines, minimalist aesthetics, and contemporary materials. The house retains its original brick walls, wooden beams, and tiles, which lend it an old-world charm, while modern glass partitions, steel elements, and open spaces create a sense of modernism. The integration of sustainable features like solar panels and effective insulation further bridges the gap between the old and the new. The designers achieve a cohesive look by carefully balancing the contrasting elements, using a limited color palette, and employing natural light to connect the spaces. The result is a harmonious blend of old-world charm and modernist design that feels timeless and unified.
