Restoration of historic buildings: Moritz Brewery by Jean Nouvel, Strasbourg, France
The Moritz Brewery in Strasbourg, France has recently been restored and renovated by renowned French architect Jean Nouvel. The building features a large courtyard, which has been connected to the various individual blocks of the complex. This connection has opened up the inner courtyard of the former industrial complex, lending an air of transparency and openness to the space. Nouvel’s renovation project has also included important sustainability aspects, such as the installation of rainwater collection systems and the utilisation of renewable energies. Furthermore, sophisticated, high-quality amenities have been used, enhancing visitors’ sensual experience of the space. The result is an interesting and modern mix of traditional and modern architecture, achieving an elegant balance between historical heritage and modern design.
At the entrance, guests of the brewery are welcomed by a vertical garden created by Parisian botanist Patrick Blanc. An open staircase leads to the second floor where there is an alfresco terrace, museum, gastronomy room and workshop. On the first floor – M store with bar offering more than 400 products as well as Moritz bar, water tank and of course the mini brewery with a capacity of 60 hectoliters of unpasteurized beer per year. The underground halls became the new cultural center; there is now a stylish restaurant and kitchen, a large multifunctional exhibition area, conference rooms and a performance corner for large and small auditoriums.
New reinforced concrete supports help spread the load more evenly. Slender reflective columns support black iron crossbars, and glass inserts give the structures a futuristic look.
