In modern schools, children are often given non-standard homework: for example, to compose a poem or write a story about themselves, draw up a verbal portrait of a friend, and draw a family coat of arms. The latter is aimed at awakening children’s interest in the history of their family and understanding of its value.

How to create a family coat of arms

For the family emblem to be more than just a picture, it must contain the required elements. According to the rules of heraldry:

• the classic coat of arms is necessarily made in the form of a shield;
• on both sides of the main element there are shield-holding figures (they can be people, various animals or figures that have some significance for the family);
• the coat of arms may be framed by a border with a motto or images of objects related to family traditions;
• in the middle of the shield is the main symbol (as a rule, it is some kind of animal, figure or plant).

Animal – a symbol of the family

According to heraldic rules, a family coat of arms can contain up to four animals. Parents with the child should look in the books, periodicals or the Internet for images of animals that symbolize the qualities inherent in the family. It is permissible for a school to draw animals on its own using watercolors or pencils. Cut out pictures should be signed, explaining what family trait each of them characterizes. To create a family coat of arms for a school, you can use images:

• phoenix (means immortality, infinity);
• dove (symbolizes peace, harmony);
• a lion (reflects courage and strength);
• fish (symbolizes success, luck, material wealth);
• swan (indicates loyalty, devotion);
• snakes (reflects wisdom);
• bees (symbolizes hard work);
• dolphin (this image means love, harmony in the family);
• dragon (personifies immunity, strong-willed character).

The first thing to do when creating a family coat of arms for a school is to choose a suitable shield. There are many different forms of this subject. Previously, the emblem depicted a shield corresponding to the location of the city or the time period in which the genus was founded. Parents and children should come up with an original form of the family coat of arms together, but you can use existing templates (finding samples on the Internet is easy).

Remember your favorite places, activities that you like to do together, hobbies. For convenience, create a list of words that reflect family values. The family coat of arms for the school may contain a description of the character of each person, expressed in the form of a symbolic image (book – mind, smile – kindness, etc.).

Since the project for the school should talk about the features of the family, fill it with the maximum amount of information and think in detail which images will simply, but capaciously tell the story about you. Nevertheless, do not overload the beautiful logo with details: limit yourself to the four basic symbols betraying family features. You can draw nature as a sign that you love it or portray objects that characterize the profession of your parents, if work is important to them. Each picture must be signed.

How to draw up the coat of arms of your family in stages:

1. Choose the appropriate symbol images, invent labels for them.
2. Think of the motto, the shape of the logo. Strive to create a unique look of the project – this will make the coat of arms unique.
3. Draw the logo on thick A4 or larger cardboard, cut it out.
4. Glue the selected pictures or draw by yourself, choosing the appropriate location for them. First divide the emblem into several sections (the number should correspond to the number of selected images).
5. You can stick a beautiful ribbon along the contour of the family emblem for school.
6. Select flowers to draw lines and other elements of the project. It can be just tones that you like, or shades symbolic for the family. You can draw with pencils or wax crayons, and felt-tip pens, paints, markers.
7. The last stage is the application of the motto. It should be made as bright as possible, but not large.

The meaning of colors in heraldry

How to make your family’s coat of arms original and beautiful for the school? To do this, choose the right color scheme, and it is better that the tones used carry the semantic load. Each color symbolizes something, keep this in mind when creating your logo:

• scarlet – courage, love;
• white – honesty, justice;
• golden – nobility, wealth;
• blue is hope;
• blue – honesty, happiness;
• orange – cheerfulness;
• black is wisdom;
• green – calm, abundance;
• yellow – mercy, faith.
