Where to install the mixer

This WordPress post delves into the details of mixer installation. It explains key installation details, such as the necessary tools, the different possible locations in the kitchen, and the differences between a standard installation and an integrated installation. Additionally, it weighs up the benefits of integrating a mixer against those of a DIY install, such as improved design, reduced cost, and minimal disruption to one's daily schedule. This post offers a comprehensive guide to choosing the right location for a mixer installation, as well as the tools and skills necessary to do so.

Not so long ago, only one kind of bathroom faucet was possible. This is such a combined option – for both the bathtub and the sink – with a common long spout that turns back and forth as needed. Who doesn’t know him. And water comes to it through pipes that go right along the wall. Before, there was no question of placing the mixer anywhere other than a wall. The bathtubs themselves did not shine either – a healthy “iron pot” occupied half of the bathroom. That’s all beauty. Look at the bathtubs now – it takes your breath away from the variety of shapes, colors, materials. New design solutions also require new technological approaches, in particular, with water supply and water supply. Now this or that location of the mixer serving the bath, as a rule, is not accidental..

Wall mounted faucets with swivel spout and a shower head, simultaneously serving both the sink and the bath, are still found. They do not lose their popularity probably because they are ideal both for filling the bathtub and for taking a shower while standing. After all, few can still afford to have a bath and a separate shower in their home. Here the only requirement is that the bathtub is in the immediate vicinity of the wall, and the other parameters do not matter. Previously, the mixer was installed directly above the bathtub drain and overflow, but now it can be found anywhere around the bathtub.

But, of course, not everything here depends on the desire, but also on the possibility of piping. If the repair is not done from scratch, then you will have to reckon with the existing center-to-center distance of the pipes already removed earlier and install a new mixer in place of the removed old one, without changing the location in any way. But if the repair is major and involves a complete replacement of pipes, then you can already dream up and bring the mixer out in any convenient place..

When choosing a wall-mounted mixer, pay attention to the length of the spout, that is, the distance from the wall to the center of its “nose”, which is always indicated in the technical data sheet. Today, bath mixers are available with three types of spouts: short, medium and long. Short-nosed are considered fashionable. But here the following moment is important: if the “nose” of the mixer is too short, the stream of water will hit the side of the bathtub and flow out of the bathtub. Every good bath faucet has a detailed technical card, just keep in mind that the drawings always show the distance from the wall to the center of the jet, but in fact it starts earlier. In addition, the sides of the bath themselves are different in width. The wider the side, the longer the spout will have to be taken. So, whatever one may say, faucets with a medium spout are the most convenient for wall mounting. With a wall-mounted mixer, it is possible to place a stationary shower arm or shower bar, with which the shower head can be lowered, raised, turned in different directions.

The height of the mixer can vary in each case, but the standard is considered to be a height of 10-15 cm from the side. This is usually enough. Sometimes the mixer is placed at the height of the tiles, with this calculation the pipes are removed. The length of the shower adapter should also be taken into account (if it is at the bottom of the mixer). Placing a faucet on the wall in an unfamiliar place can add originality to the entire bathroom.

Bath mixer. A number of well-known manufacturers present on the market bathtubs in which the mixer is located on the side. This is especially true in complex whirlpool baths with electronic control panels. In such models, it is an integral part of the entire structure and its design as a whole – this is such a complete composition. And you cannot change it without disrupting the system as a whole. That is, in theory it is possible, but in practice it is very rare. “Empty” bathtubs are also offered to the buyer. Here we can choose any mixer, shower and so on, the desired design and placement, completely for ourselves. Often, expensive bathtubs from well-known manufacturers are offered as a complete set, with a strictly defined mixer on the side. When an “empty” bath is ordered from the factory, the holes are selected for the specific mixer that will be installed on it, and almost any placement options are provided for within the framework of existing standards in this area.

Stand faucet – A spectacular and very beautiful option for expensive and exclusive freestanding claw-foot bathtubs in spacious washrooms. Imagine a “antique” bath in a classic style, with some kind of lion’s paws. The corresponding luxuriously decorated mixer is also matched to this. There are also modern options. This is a fully coordinated design, a complete program. Much less often, the bath and the mixer are matched to each other, but experts do not recommend doing this, because there may be discrepancies, for example, in the color of the legs of the bath and the mixer.

A stand with a mixer is usually installed next to the bathroom. It should be noted that the mixer on the counter can be installed only if the bathroom is created from scratch, since the water supply to it is carried out from below, from under the floor. For faucets on a stand, showers are usually on a flexible hose, but there are separate models in which it is permanently installed on top of a metal tube, in the manner of old showers.

Mixer on the shelf belongs to the category of design delights. This is a purely decorative move, used to create custom bathroom designs, which usually leads to a 100% increase in the cost of the project as a whole. Faucets designed to be installed on a shelf are an order of magnitude more expensive than wall-mounted ones; they are quite expensive high-design items. In this way, cascade mixers are often installed. It can look very different: it is installed in a niche or lining near the built-in bathtub, or on a podium around the bathtub, or on a specially built shelf lined with tiles or stone.

There are a variety of mounting options. The faucet can be placed almost anywhere around the bath – usually an expensive model with large dimensions and irregular shapes. With the flexible hose you can place the spout, taps and shower in different ways in relation to each other. The latter in this case is usually retractable. Experts consider this a disadvantage, since the structure wears out quickly due to the frequent extension and cleaning of the hose. If the bathtub is adjacent to the wall, you can install a bar or shower stand on it..

Why is there such diversity? And why does the mixer “walk” around the perimeter of the bath like a young Cossack? And for comfort – so that the stream of water is where it is convenient for the owner, and not where it is the only possible. Also for originality – after all, it is from many such details that the individual face of the house is formed. The choice is always good, especially if professionals help to make it up.
