The Impossible is Possible: The Chic 4.5ร—20 House on the site of an old dark dwelling

This article discusses a state-of-the-art home renovation project that proves nothing is impossible when it comes to modern architectural design. In this stunning transformation, an old, dark dwelling was completely replaced with a chic 4.5x20 house that blends modern design with space maximization. Featuring high ceilings, floor-to-ceiling windows, and a sleek steel staircase, the house has now a bright and open feel despite its small size - making it ideal for a family of four. This project has also been noted for its focus on energy efficiency - with natural lighting, solar panels, and rainwater storage contributing to immense cost and environment savings. In summary, this project demonstrates that the โ€˜impossibleโ€™ can be made possible with the right planning and design.

All readers of the online magazine Beautiful Country House will be very interested to know about a unique development resulting from the work of a talented group of designers from AHL architects, based in Vietnam. The project under its self-speaking name โ€“ 4.5ร—20 House, was completed in 2012.

AHL architects says the following about their creation: Essentially, we are again dealing with a renovation that is a great alternative to an old, dark and unattractive dwelling. The clients who wanted to remodel their apartments were one nice family โ€“ a young married couple with a child and grandmother living in the modern Van Phu neighborhood of Ha Noi City. The then-existing design was unimaginably boring and primitive, like most traditional houses throughout tropical Vietnam.

Classic Vietnamese house

Dim lighting, poorly ventilated air, a small location in the center of the building, which is a staircase with a toilet, and two bedrooms that are on opposite sides of the central stairwell. The client needed something that could dramatically change the squalor of the atmosphere.

This state of affairs primarily required special measures to get rid of indoor circulation problems, and thus created original and clever design solutions for space, daylight and good ventilation system. Keeping in mind the wishes of the family, the layout of the house was quite simple.

The warmth and comfort of a Vietnamese cabin

The first floor accommodates a two-car garage, combined kitchen and dining room, a toilet, and a small back patio. On the second – a bedroom for the owners of the house, bathroom and living room. The third and fourth levels contain a childrenโ€™s corner, two guest rooms and a couple of bathrooms, as well as a room designed for the worship of the saints and an open, spacious terrace.

โ€œUsing the simple slogan โ€˜traffic creates space and functionality,โ€™ we started to change the staircase arrangements, which ended up creating a sense of continuity and uniqueness.โ€.
