Even Alexander Pushkin assured: “Reading is the best teaching
Something opening up
If you’re looking for a good book to read in Newmarket, Ontario, Canada, all you have to do is pop into Story Pod, the open-air public library designed by Canadian architects Atelier Kastelic Buffey and unveiled last summer.
What are those strange structures in the middle of the parking lot?? It’s a progressive economy-class urban housing
Something easily constructed
No one is surprised anymore by a far from rosy picture: young middle-class people working in a big city, like Bangkok, but not getting enough money to live in their own house.
Thai design studio Allzone has come up with a solution called “The New Generation of the Urban Poor”. It consists of creating holistic residential units on unfinished high-rise buildings within the city limits.
Typically, their construction was stopped halfway through for economic reasons.
Light House translates to “light house,” a name that speaks for itself. The piece, which Allzone presented during October’s Chicago Architecture Biennial, would cost $1,200 to purchase.
It consists of walls made of a light metal frame wrapped in several layers of strong, windproof material.
Assembled area can be up to 40 square meters. Opaque polymer fabric fence ensures the necessary privacy.
“These buildings don’t house homeless people or fringe groups, but legal tenants who pay rent to the building owner,” Chuchui says.
“It’s more like an act of “recycling” an unfinished structure. It’s just that the format of its use is a little different than originally planned”.
The window construction consists of a telescopic frame glazed on all sides
The designer developed her window to meet the building standards of Brooklyn, but the concept itself is easily adaptable to other neighborhoods, cities and even countries.
Maybe in the future similar mechanisms will be installed everywhere and they will stop being perceived as weird.
“I do not intend to impose this idea on everyone, I just wanted to provide a safe and cozy space to enjoy peacefulness,” admits Aldana Garcia.
Its window design is currently being finalized for mass use.
and technological advancements. With the evolution of high-rise buildings, eco-friendly designs, and smart cities, urban architecture has come a long way. However, I am curious to know how urban architects ensure the preservation of the cultural and historical essence of a city while embracing modernity? How do they strike a balance between functionality, sustainability, and maintaining the unique character of a place?
How has modern urban architecture adapted to changes in lifestyles? Are there any specific design or structural features that have been incorporated to cater to the evolving needs of urban dwellers?
