In the affluent suburb of Lo Barnechea in Santiago de Chile (the capital of Chile) is the Caterpillar House, designed. The total area of the lot given up for construction is 900 sq. m, the building itself is 350 sq. .
We offer our dear readers of Forum City to discuss the interior design and architectural solutions implemented in the Caterpillar mansion.In thinking through the concept of the future dwelling, the bureau’s staff took into account the two main tasks facing them:
- The Caterpillar House was designed to blend in seamlessly with the surrounding landscape of the Andean foothills;
- Avoiding the use of air conditioning.
The complex has two levels. The first is the entrance and common areas, the second is the private areas – bedrooms. The house has many windows, which allows you to enjoy the beautiful views of the foothills, fresh mountain air and get maximum natural light.
The entire structure is designed so that the air masses can circulate freely inside the premises. Construction lasted eight months. The designer of the project used non-standard ideas for the design of the house, in particular, the materials used to build the building: old shipping containers, sheet metal, originally connected them in the form of crawling caterpillars. This firmly established the mansion’s name – Caterpillar House.
Would you like to live in it??
Designed by architect Sebastián Irarrázaval.
What was the inspiration behind the design of the caterpillar-shaped mansion, and how does it integrate with its surroundings in Lo Barnechea, Santiago de Chile?
