Architect Carlos de Riaño Lozano’s magical transformation of Madrid’s Conde Duque –s major work
Architect Carlos de Riaño Lozano has successfully transformed Madrid’s 18th-century Conde Duque complex into a museum and cultural hub. Lozano’s work has both preserved and enhanced its original charm while creating a modern and innovative design. It is separated into four distinct areas focusing on themes of memory, art, and culture, that feature captivating outdoor spaces, modern galleries, and interactive exhibits. Lozano’s work is estimated to have increased the frequency of Conde Duque visitors to 2000 visitors per day. This transformation of Madrid’s Conde Duque has been a successful revitalization of a old historic site, incorporating new technologies such as interactive exhibits and outdoor spaces that bring the complex to life.
In 2004, the decision was made to globally renovate this one of the most incredible buildings in the world, opening a new page in its history. Work continued right up to 2011. A challenging project on a grand scale, the Conde Duque is Madrid’s second largest building (after the old royal palace at Alcázar) and one of the oldest and largest in the city.
Conde Duque’s location in Madrid made it much easier for the world’s best architects to make it a building quite appropriate for such a big city. The vast grounds conveniently house the concert and assembly halls, the theater and more. Open spaces also have a new meaning and purpose.
The second phase of the reconstruction covered the northern part where significant changes were made. Library, archive, observatory and museum of modern art.
Wooden and wrought iron furniture, stone arches and white vaults are the result of painstaking design work and a stronghold of new life at Conde Duque.
