How to properly apply liquid wallpaper to walls

This WordPress post provides helpful instructions for applying liquid wallpaper to one's walls, emphasizing its advantages over paper wallpaper. The process begins with adding primer to the wall to help the liquid wallpaper adhere and ensure an even surface. Next, the wallpaper is mixed with water to a thick paste-like consistency and applied in thin layers with a trowel for a smooth texture. After drying, the wallpaper becomes durable and washable yet easy to remove without causing damage, unlike paper wallpaper. With its various colours and designs, liquid wallpaper is an excellent choice for achieving an attractive interior.

The first stage is preparation. You will need:

  • spatulas
  • graters for finishing works
  • bucket with a volume of at least 20 liters
  • white putty
  • primer for interior decoration

Walls must be cleaned of old finishing materials, leveled, putty and primed in two layers.

The second step is to create a solution. Liquid wallpaper is sold in large bags, when dry it resembles small pieces of cotton wool. The contents of the bag must be mixed in a bucket with water at room temperature in the proportions indicated on the package. If you decide to use glitter or dyes, then first you need to dissolve these additives in water and only after that you should immerse the cellulose dry mixture in a bucket.

It is recommended to mix all components with hands without gloves. To distribute the glue and all other materials evenly, you need to periodically pass the mixture between your fingers during the mixing process. A few minutes after the start of this work, a thick plastic solution will turn out in the bucket, resembling dough or well-heated plasticine in consistency. The finished mixture must be put back in a cellophane bag and left to lie for 12 hours at room temperature.

The third stage is application. After 12 hours, liquid wallpaper can be applied to the wall. Take a small apple-sized amount of the mixture in the palm of your hand, press it against the wall and use a grater to spread it evenly over the surface to be treated. In this case, it is advisable to keep the working surface of the grater at a slight angle to the wall. Ideally, the thickness of the liquid wallpaper layer should be 1–2 mm.

The final stage is correction. The finishing material applied to a solid base gradually dries up and at the same time shrinks and brightens a little, as a result of which various defects can appear on the wall: poorly processed areas, small gaps. All these shortcomings are easily corrected. Small defects will be quickly eliminated if another thin layer of liquid wallpaper is put on top of problem areas.

In a day, the decorative coating will completely dry out and will feel like a natural stone to the touch. New wallpapers will delight you for many years!
