We offer you one of the simple and low-cost ways to make a small porch made of wood with your own hands. The advantage of this method is that the entire porch is assembled as a separate structure, and only at the end of the assembly is it put and attached to the house..
In the work on creating such a wooden porch, you do not need to reinforce the bearing parts with metal elements, and the only fasteners you need are screws and self-tapping screws..
Construction, materials and tools required
Dimensions
In order to determine the dimensions, you need to know the height of the threshold, the distance from the bottom of the door to the base on which the porch will be installed.
For example, if the threshold height is 550 mm, then the porch height should be 50-100 mm less so that the door leaf does not touch the upper step.
The width of the porch should be approximately one and a half times wider than the front door, if the doorway is 800 mm, then the width of the steps should be at least 1200 mm, however, the final decision on the width of the structure must be made based on the technical feasibility.
The dimensions of the porch we are considering: height โ 490 mm, width โ 1300 mm, the total length of the steps of the staircase โ 1100 mm.
Required materials
For the manufacture of the frame and steps of the porch, you can use wood of different species. It is recommended to use larch or oak for the frame, since these species are resistant to decay and are able to withstand heavy loads, and for steps, in order to save money, you can use pine or spruce.
Boards for the frame, with the calculation of shrinkage and processing, must be at least 50 mm in thickness and at least 160 mm in width, for steps at least 50ร310 mm.
Required tool
Any drill is suitable for drilling holes, but it is more convenient and faster to work with a screwdriver, and you will need a drill with a diameter of 5 mm.
To tighten the screws, you need a screwdriver or screwdriver with a bit corresponding to the head of the screw or self-tapping screw.
Hacksaw or miter saw, joinery square, rasp, chisel, hammer, planer, tape measure, and sandpaper.
Self-tapping screws with a diameter of 5 mm and a length of 75-80 mm.
Step-by-step cutting of parts
To make a porch, you need to cut the parts to size. The edges of the finished parts must strictly correspond to an angle of 90 degrees, this will facilitate the work during the subsequent assembly and fitting of parts together.
Boards for the sidewalls of the supporting frame
- 1050x150x40 mm = 3 pieces.
- 800x150x40 mm = 3 pieces.
- 550x150x40 mm = 3 pieces.
In the boards of the sidewalls of the supporting frame, holes with a diameter of 5 mm are drilled according to the marking, this is done for ease of assembly and so that the ends of the boards do not split when screws are screwed into them.
On the outer edges of the long sides of the parts, to make the product look more beautiful, you need to chamfer, you can do this either with a plane or with coarse sandpaper.
Vertical bars made of bars
The posts connect the supporting frames, they are made of bars with a section of 40ร40 mm, so that the bearing capacity of the entire structure is reliable. It is necessary to ensure that there are as few large knots in the material for their manufacture.
- 450x40x40 mm = 6 pieces.
- 300x40x40 mm = 3 pieces.
- 150x40x40 mm = 3 pieces.
Steps
- 1300ั 300ั 40 mm = 4 pieces.
- 1300ั 110ั 40 mm = 2 pieces.
- 1300x150x40 mm = 1 piece.
A chamfer is removed along the perimeter of all sides of the outer parts of the parts, holes with a diameter of 5 mm are drilled according to the marking.
Assembly
Assembling the supporting part of the frame
The assembly of the porch must be started from the side structures, the racks from the bars are set along the edges of the cascades of boards and are fastened with screws.
If the parts are cut correctly, then the lower cascades under the steps should be 250 mm wide.
Before you start fixing the steps, you need to position all three supporting parts of the frame as shown in the figure.
The length of the steps is 1300 mm, on both sides it is necessary to retreat 40 mm, 1300 โ 80 = 1220 mm, it is at this distance that the extreme supporting frames should stand. The middle frame is exposed exactly in the middle.
Fasteners of steps
The installation of steps should be started from two opposite extreme sides of the porch, the upper rear step and the lower front riser should be attached first, 40 mm indents should remain on both sides of the frame.
To ensure that the screws do not rest against each other when tightening, the upper steps are attached to the horizontal edges of the frame boards, and the risers to vertical bars.
During installation, a sequence is needed, you should start from the bottom up, the riser is attached first, but since this has already been done in the previous stage, the next step is attached.
The width of the cascade for the step is 250 mm, add to it the thickness of the riser 40 mm and get 290 mm, and since the width of the step is 300 mm, it should protrude from the frame by exactly 10 mm.
Finished porch without railings:
Handrail making and fixing
Balusters are made of bars with a cross section of 45ร45 mm, bars of the following sizes will be required:
- 45x45x1124 mm = 6 pieces.
- 45x45x975 mm = 2 pieces.
- 45x45x810 mm = 2 pieces.
On all four edges of the blanks, a marking is applied for subsequent selection.
The sample can be made with a semicircular rasp and sanded with sandpaper.
The handrails are made of bars with a cross section of 45ร85 mm, making this part on your own is perhaps the most difficult task, if you can round off the edges with a plane and grind with a sandpaper, then you will need either an electric mill or a manual chisel to cut an even groove.
Before attaching the balusters to the porch, it is necessary to select the grooves 45ร45 mm in size according to the markings at the edges of the steps.
In order to attach the handrail, the upper edges of the first, second and third balusters are cut at an angle equal to the slope of the porch.
Ready-made balusters are inserted into the nests selected in the steps and fastened with screws to the sides of the frame.
The handrails are fitted with grooves on the balusters and fastened with screws.
Before installation, the entire structure must be impregnated with linseed oil or covered with any protective agent.
The finished porch is installed and attached to the house either with screws or dowels.
Material consumption excluding waste:
- Board 50ร160 mm = 8.5 linear m.
- Board 50ร120 mm = 2.6 linear m.
- Board 50ร310 mm = 5.2 linear m.
- Bar 50ร50 mm = 14.4 linear meters m.
- Bar 50ร85 mm = 2.44 linear meters m.
- Self-tapping screws 70-80ร5 mm = 142 pcs.
Iโm curious to know, what are the essential steps or tips for building your own wooden porch? Is it feasible for someone with limited experience in carpentry? Any recommendations for materials, tools, or resources that can help make the process smoother?
