Recommendation points

Composite decking is an innovative building material that combines the decorativeness of wood and the practicality of polymer. In the article we will consider the composition and properties of “polywood”, give advice on choosing a finishing board, and also describe the technology of its installation.

Terrace board: composition and production of wood-polymer composite

Until recently, decking was made mainly from larch or exotic tree species, which are distinguished by their high density and high resin content. Subsequently, “thermowood” became widespread – a material that can not change performance for 10 years.

Decking board has become a worthy alternative to natural wood products, which consists of three main components:

  • cellulose fibers or wood flour – 40–70%;
  • thermoplastic polymers (organic or synthetic) – 30-60%;
  • complex of chemical additives – about 5%.

In the manufacture of polymer-wood composite, automated equipment for the plastic industry is used. The whole process of decking can be broken down into the following steps:

  1. Processing wood to form the smallest particles (0.7-1.5 mm).
  2. Drying wood flour.
  3. Dosing of components. The optimal ratio of polymers and wood – 50/50.
  4. Pressing the product.
  5. Cropping to length, formatting to width.

Technical and operational properties of the finishing material

The technical and operational characteristics of decking are largely determined by the ratio of the main ingredients in the material. However, we can highlight the general properties inherent in all WPCs:

  • resistance to temperature fluctuations and corrosion;
  • immunity to UV radiation and moisture;
  • light weight of the material;
  • the ability to endure strong physical activity;
  • resistance to mechanical damage;
  • the material is not exposed to biological pests and chemicals;
  • service life of decking – about 50 years;
  • ease of installation / dismantling of the coating;
  • ease of use – the surface of the board does not slip and is pleasant to the touch;
  • environmental friendliness of the material – WPC does not contain formaldehyde and lead;
  • does not require special care.

Criteria for choosing a high-quality composite

When buying a terrace board, you should pay attention to the following product parameters.

Component ratiowood chips / polymers:

  • 70/30 – the board resembles processed wood in appearance. A large percentage of wood fibers reduces the practicality of the material – the decking becomes more fragile and is able to expand from excess moisture, the service life is up to 7 years;
  • 50/50 – with this ratio, the material retains the functionality of the polymer and the aesthetics of wood;
  • 40/60 – the decorative qualities of the tree weaken, the board resembles ordinary plastic.

Polymer type.For the manufacture of decking, one of three types of polymer compounds is used:

  • polyethylene – the composite wears out faster and is subject to flammability;
  • polypropylene – middle class of quality, non-slip, practical and durable;
  • PVC is a stable and the most expensive polymer, absolutely non-slip and highly durable.

Attention! A polyethylene-based decking board cannot be used to decorate swimming pools, saunas, piers, decks and other places located near water bodies. The surface of such decking is slippery.

Dimensions of deckingare selected for the intended purpose. For the device of flooring on the veranda and terrace, a long, wide board is chosen, for laying paths in the garden – short, not too bulky bars. Narrow boards are often used to decorate the recreation area around the pool or to install fences on the porch of the house, along the perimeter of the gazebo. Large-size decking suitable for paving decks and creating architectural compositions.

Manufacturer company.Well-known brands – Legro, Mirradex and Bruggan – have proven themselves well in the market. Decking of domestic production is also gradually developing, its main advantage is its affordable cost.

Installation of decking

Tools and materials

To lay the terrace board you will need:

  • electric jigsaw;
  • circular saw with carbide teeth;
  • screwdriver / screwdriver;
  • drill;
  • roulette, level;
  • pencil and ruler;
  • rubber hammer;
  • protective glasses.

Preparatory activities

The terrace board must be installed at an air temperature of at least 0 °. Before installation, the board must be “adapted” to the environment – laid out on a dry substrate near the installation site and left for a day.

The deck is placed on the prepared base. This could be:

  • even and continuous concrete screed;
  • support beams made of concrete, poured into the ground;
  • concrete slabs laid on a sand or gravel bed (slab size – not less than 30x30x5 cm);
  • smooth, hard surface covered with artificial fibers (material prevents weeds from germinating).

The supporting structure is installed in compliance with the following rules:

  • the slope in the longitudinal direction of the boards – 1-1.5%;
  • joining the lags with each other occurs with a gap of 20 mm;
  • distance between supporting lags: 30 cm – normal laying; 25 cm – places with intensive passage; 20 cm – diagonal styling;
  • when docking with fixed stops (curbs, house walls, pipes), a gap of at least 20 mm is provided.

Laying steps

1. Arrangement of the supporting structure. The lags must be positioned so that there is one support beam for each end of the board..

2. Lay the first board with the edge of the base perpendicular to the support lags.

3. Insert a clip under the board and fix it with a screw at a distance of at least 3 cm from the edge (fasteners usually come with a terrace board).

4. Insert the next board into the clip and fix it with a screw at the intersection with the support log.

5. After all planks have been laid, trim the edges with a circular saw. Boards should not protrude beyond the log by more than 5-7 cm.

6. On the ends of the boards along the perimeter of the overlap, mount a corner of WPC.

Wood Composite Coating Maintenance

The terrace board does not need special care, but it is better to remove the dirt that appears immediately after it occurs.

The composite material is cleaned longitudinally. Warm water and household detergents can be used. Stubborn dirt is removed with high pressure cleaners. Cigarette marks and oil stains are removed by sanding the damaged area.

      When selecting a terrace board made of polymer composite, there are several key factors to consider. Firstly, look for boards with high-quality polymer materials that are resistant to UV radiation, moisture, and temperature changes. It’s also important to choose a board with a proper texture to prevent slipping and ensure safety.
      Proper installation is crucial for durability and stability. Ensure a solid and level substructure, use proper fasteners, and follow the manufacturer’s guidelines for installation. It’s recommended to leave enough space for expansion and contraction due to temperature changes.
      To maintain the quality and longevity of the terrace board, regular cleaning is essential. Remove debris and dirt using a broom or hose regularly. Avoid using harsh chemicals or pressure washers as they may damage the surface. Additionally, inspect for any damages or loose fasteners, and promptly address any issues to prevent further damage. Applying a protective coating or sealant can also help enhance durability and prolong the board’s lifespan.

Firstly, ensure the boards are made of high-quality materials that are durable and resistant to rot, mold, and fading. It’s important to choose boards that are suitable for your climate and will withstand outdoor elements. Look for boards that have a realistic wood-like appearance for aesthetic purposes.

      During installation, follow the manufacturer’s guidelines closely to ensure the boards are properly secured and aligned. Make sure the foundation is level and stable before laying the boards to prevent warping or shifting over time. Use appropriate fasteners and spacing to ensure the boards are securely in place.

      To properly maintain and care for polymer composite terrace boards, regularly clean the surface with a mild detergent and water to remove dirt and debris. Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners that could damage the material. Periodically inspect the boards for any signs of wear, warping, or damage, and address any issues promptly to prevent further damage.

      Additionally, consider applying a protective sealant or UV protectant to prolong the lifespan of the boards and maintain their appearance. Finally, make sure to follow any specific care instructions provided by the manufacturer to ensure the longevity and beauty of your polymer composite terrace boards.
